Beginner Free-Motion Quilting

Learn to quilt your own quilts with confidence.

Setting Yourself Up for Success

Before you start quilting, let’s make sure everything is ready. In this module, we’ll cover the fundamentals that will help you avoid frustration and build confidence from the very beginning. A little preparation now will make the quilting itself much more enjoyable.

Lesson 1: Basting

A well-basted quilt is one of the biggest keys to successful free-motion quilting. Taking a little extra time now will help prevent puckers, shifting, and frustration later. In this lesson, I’ll show you the method I use and explain why good basting makes quilting so much easier.

Lesson 2: Machine Set Up & Other Tools

You don’t need a fancy sewing machine or a room full of gadgets to create beautiful quilting. In this lesson, I’ll walk you through the machine settings I use, share a few of my favorite quilting tools, and help you get everything set up so you can quilt with confidence.

Lesson 3: Needles and Thread

Needles and thread come in many different types, sizes, and materials, but choosing them doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In this lesson, I’ll introduce the most common options, explain when to use each one, and share the combinations I reach for most often when quilting.

Lesson 4: Tension

Tension is one of the topics quilters worry about most—but it doesn’t have to be. In this lesson, I’ll explain what tension is, what causes common problems, and show you simple ways to troubleshoot and achieve balanced stitches with confidence.
