Procrastination

Yes…..I procrastinate. And I HATE IT!!

Especially when I realize that my concerns were not valid and that I should have just DONE IT!!

In this case, it was quilting this simple charity quilt……

So….why the delay????

It started when I received the top…..

I walked into our Charity Bee meeting to take a couple of quilt tops home to use for practicing Free-Motion Quilting. Most of our (hundreds) of donated quilts are quickly finished on a volunteer’s longarm machine, but they are always elated when someone else wants to tackle one or two.

The first one I was handed was smaller, and I knew that I could complete it in a heartbeat, but this one was larger, and I didn’t immediately see a quilting design!!

So, it was relegated to the “do later” pile…..ie….pitched in the corner between my two fabric shelves…. AND FORGOTTEN!!

Well, not completely forgotten…..it was still on my To-Do List!!

So, a few weeks ago I decided that IT WAS TIME…..the deed MUST be done!!

And, as with most of my procrastinated projects, this one was fun, easy, and I was able to finish it using my 20-minute per morning creative sessions.

And look how great the quilting is……

I will now deliver this back to the group and grab one or two MORE tops.

Maybe I won’t procrastinate…..but I wouldn’t bet on it!!

Do you struggle with procrastination???

How do you avoid it?

  1. Maybe procrastinating is part of the human condition?

Reading a daily blog, like yours, sometimes gets me motivated to tackle a quilt I’ve been avoiding.

I have found items put away last year, due to boredom, all of a sudden look challenging and interesting enough to bring new found enthusiasm.

    1. I agree Dale….it is part of who we are!! And with some creative projects, you just have to be in the right frame of mind to do them!! It isn’t like accounting….the deadline is THERE and I have to meet it!!

  2. Not only do I procrastinate (and hate it), but the more I procrastinate, the more the project(s) in question keep me awake at night!! I find the easiest way to beat it is to just get the item prepped. That is, keep it out, in sight, and make some sort of start on it. Like maybe load it on the longarm, piece the backing, design the embroidery, just anything, really, to get it started. Then, when something new and fun catches my eye, well, I can’t start it until if finish the one that’s in the way. Procrastination over!

    1. Doing just one small step is key isn’t it Karin!! And I always find (in work or play) that I have built the project into a HUGE thing when, in fact, it is simple and easily accomplished!! One day I will learn!!

  3. I try to use a weekly to do list to get me through things that I might push aside. I love checking off the box when it is done. This helps yet doesn’t mean I always get the task done. Love that you use the 20 minutes per day approach.
