I have a dilemma that I think you might be able to settle.
Back when I re-did my studio and added the new fabric shelves, I spent hours AND HOURS ironing fabric and placing it on the shelves.
It looked SO good….
But, over the last 5 years, I have not taken the time to replace the fabric in the correct bins and now it looks like this…..
I know that it is time to re-sort the fabrics, and I could just do them the exact same way, but I am wondering if there might be a better way.
I have been using a lot more solids recently, so I am thinking about moving all of the solid fabrics together.
I have also thought about pulling all of the smaller pieces (ie fat quarter minimum) and putting them in one place.
Do you have any thoughts about what I should do?

So…I give myself 15 minutes at the end of the day to clean up. You are so disciplined. If your current approach requires too much time to maintain, it is good to look at a different approach. Sounds like you already have some great ideas. Solids separate (like fabric shops do) and smaller pieces elsewhere (like remnants bins). Calm creative chaos. Even your “mess” looks pretty good to me!
I usually don’t mind the “messy”, but I think it has gotten to a stage that it is a block to me rather than an inspiration.
Good ideas. If time is a factor, set an alarm for 30 minutes and work on it in 30-minute increments. Good luck!

Even your less-organized fabric stash looks great to me, Frances. I think your system is pretty darn good. I do think Christie’s recommendations have merit. I like that she reminds you that fabric stores arrange the solids separately, as you were thinking of doing. Over the decades the sellers have discovered a layout that works for their customers.

Yes! Organize fabrics to serve your work style best. Also i don’t iron before storing. I use a ruler to fold and iron as needed. Saves a lot of time.
Not ironing would save a lot of time, but I am not sure that my slight OCD would allow it. I will admit that I don’t iron every perfectly, but ate least try to flatten it somewhat!!
