A Rainy Day in Bangkok

On Friday morning, we started out with a walk in the park.  This wonderful park is only a few blocks from Simon and Vera’s downtown apartment.  It was absolutely full of people walking, running, doing Tai-Chi type exercises etc.

One of the first things that we saw was this shrine…..

_6102996

Followed by this exercise class…..

_6102997

I loved this exercise bike…..

_6103003

And then there was this outdoor gym…..

_6103017 And watching all of the proceedings were these Monitor lizards…..

_6103011 Walking back to their apartment, we went thru this wonderful market…..

_6103025Simon bought these delicious fruit called Rambutan…..

_6103024  …..which had a pear type taste and texture.

We passed one food vendor and he insisted that we buy a roasted banana and roasted sweet potato……

_6103031

They were WONDERFUL!!!!! _6103034 We walked a bit further and Michael wanted to try a fried chicken leg….

_6103037 …..which came with a small bag of spicy sauce…..YUM!!!!

I enjoyed watching people purchase from the soup vendor.   The buyer would get a plastic bag, add whatever herbs and greens that he wanted…..

_6103040

The woman would fill another little plastic bag with noodles….._6103041 …..and yet another little bag with a spicy broth……

_6103042 The three bags were packaged together and the purchaser took them to their office, mixed it all together and then sat at their desk and ate breakfast.  What a great way to start the day!!!!!

So, after trying various street foods, Michael found his Mecca…..STARBUCKS……

_6103053

The laughter in this picture is because Simon (in his dry Aussie humor) had just said that “Michael wasn’t ordering a double espresso, but rather calling himself a “dopio”!!!

In the afternoon, Simon had to go off to work so Vera took us out to visit the Grand Palace.  We walked to the Elevated Train Station and took the train for a few minutes, then hopped onto a water taxi.

We particularly enjoyed seeing the long boats….._6103073 We were interested in the incongruence’s seen along the river.  From this gorgeous hotel/apartment….._6103087

……to these hovels at the edge of the river…._6103090

As we were walking to the temple, we strolled thru a sidewalk market and the first thing that I saw were……

_6103094 ….false teeth…..pre-made and ready to chew!!!!!

The Grand Palace was gorgeous, but unfortunately there was a torrential downpour (it IS the rainy season here)  just after we entered the compound, so we did not get to see a lot, but sheltered under the main temple so did get to take some photos there.

This is the main compound.  As you can see, they like their “bling”!!  The golden dome really showed up against the darkening sky…..

_6103185

Looking at the size of the people standing beneath these 2 statues will give you some idea as to their scale.  By the way, most of the shiny stuff are not gems and jewels, but tiny mirrors….._6103105

This is one of the murals painted on a wall.  The artist was able to achieve an amazing sense of depth and three-dimension….I think that the touches of gold paint really helped with this….._6103117

These were the trays that were ready to hold the offerings made to the Buddha._6103122 Here we are…..wet and barefoot, but happy!!!!

_6103131 One funny story (at least to Vera and myself)…..we had to remove our shoes before we could enter this temple complex and dutifully placed them on metal shelves by the stairs.   When it started raining, we didn’t think about the fact that Michael had worn close toed shoes with socks, and that those shoes were rapidly filling up with water as it rained.   When he picked them up, they weighed a TON and he happily squelched his way back home again!!!

I love this photo which was taken on the corner of one of the long hallways….

_6103134

Being true to my nature, I found wonderful quilting designs.  These concrete etchings were innocently placed at the bottom of the railings all around the building.  I took several photos, but could have easily used up another 100 frames with the different designs….._6103159

This was a vat of holy water and the people would pick up one of the flowers, dip it in the water and then sprinkle themselves with it.   _6103161 We watched one young couple spend a long time there dipping the water into a plastic bag.  Vera said that they were probably taking it to be sprinkled on a sick relative or something of that sort.  I guess that the luck was better if they had to work hard to retrieve the water as they were using a bottle cap to dip into the vat.

This temple houses a golden Buddha but you were not allowed to take photos inside the temple, so here it is from a LONG distance away……_6103174Vera said that there are different sets of clothes that are put on the Buddha depending on the season.  Many people were sitting or kneeling on the floor of the temple and I was interested to see a sign that said not to point your feet toward the god.  Apparently, the bottom of the foot is considered to be bad luck.

When we left the Palace, we tried to catch a taxi to the nearest train station, but they all wanted to charge WAY too much  (200 BAHT) so we ended up walking to the water taxi and then returning home the way that we had come.

A “Frances” sort of day

On Wednesday, Michael had meetings to attend so after breakfast I headed out to get lost in Green Lake Park.

Since I mentioned breakfast, I will tell you that we have found the most wonderful pastry to eat.  They are, amazingly enough, called “Breakfast Cookies” and remind me of Arrowroot Biscuits (cookies) from Australia.  They have a very mild flavor and are tasty consumed with coffee or tea.   I even added a juicy orange one morning.

OK….back to the trip to Green Lake…….

When I am sight-seeing by myself I enjoy strolling slowly along the streets and observing everything that I can find, and this morning I was not disappointed.

The first thing that caught my eye was a delivery bicycle moving rapidly UP the hill even though the rider was not pedaling.  As it passed I realized the reason for his velocity……another man riding a motor scooter had his foot propped up on the back of the cycle and was giving him a friendly push up the hill.

So, I crossed the street and this is what I encountered…..

IMG_0245

This loader was being moved to another site and it was rolling on tires to protect the pavement.  As the machine would clear the tires, the ones at the back would roll the tires to the front where they would be placed in front of the tracks.  This event seemed to be a highlight for many passers as there was quite a crowd of people watching, laughing and taking photos.

As I successfully found and entered Green Lake Park my first sight was a playground….not filled with kids but with adults…..

IMG_0250 They were doing chins, stretching and using a pedal type thing to do aerobic (sort-of) exercise.

Then, around another corner came…..

_6082827 ……a dance/exercise class.

There were about 40+ women participating in an outdoor dance class, lead by the gentleman in yellow.   In this photo they were learning a new section of the dance and he had them practice it MANY times.  He appeared to be a fairly good instructor as he repeated the instruction in each little pocket of women until they had all had a chance to learn it.

I did a video of the entire dance and, since I have really good internet at the moment, I decided to go ahead and download it……enjoy…….

Here are some of my favorite images from the “parasol” dance…..

_6082870

_6082873 _6082876 In between dances, the women would laugh and practice the parts that they had done incorrectly.

Then out came the fans.  Apparently they knew this routine very well since they only did it once…..

_6082911I very reluctantly left this area and proceeded inward, and it was here that I found the “Study in Bike” photo for the day….

_6082916 As I walked around the outside of the park I was interested by the various activities going on.

The next group of exercisers were doing MY kind of work –out.    First there  was ear lobe pulling followed by moving the tongue around their mouth in a circular motion.  I believe that I will teach a class in this when I get home!!

As I walked down the path I could have learned to knit, gotten a massage, found a marriage partner or gotten my toenails cleaned……all of the morning ablutions in one fresh-air place!!!!

_6082922

Speaking of marriage partners…..do you remember the photo that I posted of the long lines of printed papers with lots of people crowding to read them….it appears that those pages contain information about potential husbands or wives.  Jialin told a story where one of her friend’s Mothers came to town and posted her information there.  She was bombarded with phone calls for weeks afterwards!!!!

I also discovered that if you have a boom-box then you have a dance floor.  There were many, many groups of dancers….sometimes a large number or sometimes just a lone couple….._6082925

I heard music coming from across the lake so I took a bridge and found a group of women singing (and one lone man playing the accordion).   I could hear them for a long time as I continued to explore the lake area._6082927Just above where they are sitting is a Pagoda that gives some wonderful views….

_6082934

I continued walking and ran into this….

_6082969 ….an ordinary trash can….right…..except this one talks to you and opens it’s door for you to put the trash in.  AND…..it is REALLY annoying!!!!

I loved the look of these picked vegetables…..

_6082947

….and especially this gentleman exercising in front of the Lotus Pond….._6082949 The exercising was not limited to older persons.  This young woman was happy with her I-pod and her exercise…..

_6082987

The lake is covered in Lotus plants which were just beginning to bloom in all sorts of colors.  It was hard to get a good photo, but here is one that was close to the path…..

_6082960I know that I keep talking about being lost in the bowels of Green Lake, but here is why.   This map shows the entire park…..

_6082988

All of the green areas are covered with tall trees so it is impossible to see the buildings that are your landmarks….

_6082918

The ONLY way out is to find the ring road around the park and start walking until you recognize something on the street that tells you exactly where you are!!!!

I ended the trip by purchasing a few “ bits and bobs” and then sitting on the side of a bridge and watching people go by.  It was fun smiling and having them return the smile.  One older lady was knitting as she walked and she came up and grabbed my hand.  I pointed to her knitting and smiled and she pointed to her feet to indicate that she was knitting socks.

It has been interesting to note the different ways that women carry their kids here.   The child is almost always carried on the back, sometimes with a carrier…..

_6082965 (Note here that the child is 0nly held on by the strap running under her bottom and around the woman’s waist.)

…..or simply   with their hands…..

_6082968 This looks highly uncomfortable!!!!

To end this day, here is a fun picture that I took of three girls out for a day in the park.  I was actually trying to offer to use their cameras and take a photo of all three of them, but they thought that I wanted a photo for myself, so here goes…..

_6082979We are not sure what the “V for Victory” sign means, but they do it in all of the photos, and not just the ones taken by crazy American women!!!!

Waiting for the plumber

Well, we spent a good portion of the day waiting for the plumber to fix our errant toilet and then another part of the day waiting for someone to come and clean the disgusting bathroom!!!

Since we couldn’t really leave to go eat lunch, I ran down to Carrefour and bought another French Baguette which we ate.   As Michael said “Bless the (horrible, imperialistic) French!!!!”.

When I first walked into the mall heading to Carrefour I was met with a cacophony of smells and wondered what was going on.  As I walked down the main walkway I realized that it was lunch time and everybody was sitting on each side of the aisle with their particular bowl of rice, noodles or something equally good.   It reminded me of our visits to some of the Dorms at Australian National University.  Some rooms had a common cooking/eating area where several students shared a small kitchen.   When you walked in there you were met with Asian, Indian and Aussie food aromas all at one time.

I was surprised as I entered the store because it had been completely rearranged.  Where there had been tables and tables of Tea Boiled Eggs and Zonzgi, now resided shoes, socks and mosquito rackets (if you haven’t ever seen these they are electrified by 2 batteries and zap the mosquitoes when you hit them with it)….Michael really wants one!!.  And then in the area where there were huge cases of refrigerated Zonzgi  and hundreds of clamoring shoppers, now there were simple rows of drinks including water, juice and soft drinks.

What a difference a day makes!!!!!

Fortunately the cleaners were finished by 5:00 and we strolled to Salvador’s for a quick dinner.

There was a table of four beautiful young women playing cards at the table next to us.  They reminded us of the Chinese equivalent of Jenny, Betsy, Jamie and Morgann!!!

The “non-English-speaking” waitress  presented us with a different style of menu and we THOUGHT that we were once again ordering the nachos, but what came out was even better!!!!   It was a mixture of rice, beans and chicken, smothered in lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream.  It was served with a side of fresh fried tortilla chips and a bowl of fresh tomato salsa.    EXCELLENT!!!!

We failed to take a photo when it arrived so thought we would instead show a photo of the aftermath……IMG_0241

Salvador’s is located next to Yunan University and is a huge expatriate area.  It is about the only place where you don’t get a double-take when people see your white face and round eyes.

We love to sit up in a loft area at the front of the shop.  That way we get good air circulation from the front windows AND we can people watch on  the street b below.  We watched this little girl waiting on the motor bike for her father to re-appear.  She made a really cute face but unfortunately I missed it with the camera…..

IMG_0240 OK…..while we have this photo, I want to talk about the blue thing on the front of the motor scooter.   It is a poncho that covers the front of your bike and goes over your head and back.   The front of the “moto-cho” (our term, not theirs) is made of clear plastic so that the headlights will show thru.  It had been raining earlier in the afternoon and was threatening to rain again so many people had these draped over the front of their bikes, with their hands thru the arm-holes, fully prepared to slip them on if needed.

I will also say that kids of ALL ages ride on the backs and fronts of these scooters.  The younger ones (such as this cutie) will ride in front of her dad, sometimes even standing up between his legs.  Older ones will perch with great relaxation on the back of the seat.  I have seen a couple who look like they have been asleep in this position.    They do not use car seats and we have seen children standing in the front seat and lolling around in the back seats.  We all recoil against this now, but it reminds me of how we lived as kids!!!

On the way back home, we decided to detour thru Yunan University campus and we were so glad that we did.  The campus was beautiful and was covered in students.

_6072814

We could hear popular music all over the campus and realized that it was coming from strategically positioned speakers.   In one area there were 6 or more basketball courts and the young men were practicing their skills.   Basketball is basically a passion here….they LOVE it!!!

If you remember we got lost the first time that we made this trip because we turned one street too early.  To avoid this in the future, we looked for landmarks and came across a billboard for “Haima”….no idea what it is.   BUT, what we thought about was a scene from Fawlty Towers where Basil (John Cleese) says to Manuel (he’s from Barcelona) that he needs a hammer.   Manuel answers, “a ham-a-sandwich??”   A long explanation of why we call this the “Hama-sandwich” corner.   Silly, but we never forget where to turn!!!!

To end this post, we wanted to catch you up on a few things that we have mentioned previously……

We had found it extremely hard to climb the 94 steps up to our apartment and suddenly realized that part of the problem is the altitude…..it is about 6000 feet above sea level so that partially accounts for our lack of breath.  I personally think that being over 50 has something to do with it too.

When we are climbing  these stairs, we look forward to seeing this decorated door……

IMG_0237

…..as it marks the 5th floor and only 18 more steps to go!!!!

When we first walked up at night we were surprised that there were no lights on the stairs, but after we turned the first corner a light came on.  So, we decided that they were motion sensitive.  Unfortunately, although we waved and waved, we could not get any of the other lights to appear.   The next evening we walked out of our door and when it slammed shut, the light came on.  OK….so they are sound sensitive…..so now we climb the stairs and give a sharp clap on each landing.  The light comes on, but I am sure that the resident’s behind the nearest door are jolted out of their reverie.  Now that I know, I have heard other people hooting as they round each corner.

Here is Michael wishing that he was 90 steps closer to home…..

_6072821

AND….go figure, I have found an idea for a quilt……

_6072806 ……isn’t this bamboo cool!!!!

Finally, I mentioned on Saturday that we were having some stomach issues.  They did not improve so we have both started on a course of antibiotics to clear out the unfriendly bacteria in our stomachs……MUCH better now!!!!

And I leave you with our next installment in the “Study in Bike”……

_6072798

Crossing the Street

We have had fun in crossing the streets here so I decided to use my I-Phone to video a typical street crossing.   As you watch the video, you may think that we have safely arrived on the other side, but watch what happens!!!

AND….beware…..objects are closer than they appear……

THEN, as we started to cross the other side of the street, we heard a man on a scooter grunting “Uhh…Uhh…Uhh”.  He was apparently trying to tell us to get out of his way, even though WE had the light.  We decided that his horn must have been broken!!!!

A Bit of Korea in China

Today, Monday, is the Chinese National Holiday known as the “Duanwu Festival”, or the “Dragon Boat Festival” to us Westerners.  I have read several different reasons for the holiday, but since I didn’t understand any of them I wont try to explain them here.

We had wondered what the day would bring, but soon realized that it is basically a day for families to gather and eat lots of food.  We did see several people out washing their hair on the sidewalks, so WE decided that it is really “National Hair Washing Day”!!  Then on Tuesday morning everybody seemed to have clean clothes hanging out to dry so maybe it is “National Washing Day…..Hair and other stuff:”!!

We walked to Carrefour, wondering if it would be open, and were not disappointed.  It was actually busier than ever and we stood in a long line to check out.  The purchase of choice for today were Tea Boiled Eggs and Zongzi.  I mentioned these in an earlier post but here is some additional information (care of Wikipedia)….

Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food, made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. They are cooked by
steaming or boiling.

The woman who runs the office where we sit was concerned that we would get hungry on the long weekend so she gave us a large box of them in various flavors.  We have yet to try them but will do so tomorrow.

We were originally supposed to have lunch with Jialin and her mother (at their home) today but her mother was called away to see a sick relative.  Since her husband is working in another province, she invited us to have lunch at one of her favorite restaurants.

We hailed a taxi and showed the driver the address card that Jialin had given us.   He nodded “Yes”, we climbed in and were off.   As he approached the area, he slowed down to a crawl, looking for the address.  He finally stopped, got out of the car and asked a local man where the place was.  He came back to us and gestured that the shop was a bit further back down the street.

We thanked him and started heading in the direction that he had pointed.  We turned into an open plaza and Michael realized that it was one that we had visited when we were here last year.   Sure enough, at the end of the plaza was the restaurant that we had dined at.  I was really impressed that he was able to recognize the area so quickly!!!

We walked back toward the main street and stopped to ask a woman where the address was.  She pointed us back up the way that we had come.  We figured that we were now within a block or two of where we needed to be so we decided to stroll slowly between the two streets and let Jialin find us…..we do stand out, you know!!

We finally asked a man selling newspapers and he pointed us to a wonderful bakery (more about that later).  Jialin showed up and ushered us back into the plaza to a small Korean restaurant.  Because the weather was so fine, we chose to sit at a table out front.  Jialin made a few comments to the owner and here came the food…..

First to arrive were cups of tea and these three bowls…..

_6062750 ….filled with Fermented Cabbage (Jialin insisted that it was NOT Kimchi, a potato-type vegetable and a type of Greens.   Now these may look innocuous, but they were SPICY, SPICY, SPICY.  We ate a few bites and quickly requested a Tsingtao Beer.  Fortunately it cut the spice so that our mouths cooled off before the rest of the food arrived.

Then came a hot plate, another set of chopsticks and these two bowls….

_6062753 ….the powder is a mixture of chili powder, cumin, sesame seeds and other unknown, but fragrant, spices.   The liquid is Soy sauce with onions and herbs.

When the plate of marinated beef arrived, along with a huge plate of vegetables the fun began….

_6062756 We placed the meat and vegetables into the pan and let it cook while we talked and laughed.   The second set of chopsticks were used for the cooking process so that raw meat never touched the chopsticks that you were eating with.

Isn’t this a pretty (and delicious) sight…..

_6062760 The vegetables included thin slices of onion, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, yams and eggplant.

As they would cook, you would use your “eating” set of chop sticks to pick up what you wanted, place it in a small bowl and then season it with the powder or liquid.  My favorite were the potatoes dipped in the powdered spices.

IT WAS SO GOOD!!!!!!

Now, many of you have been incredulous that I have been using chopsticks while we are here, but I now have documentary evidence……

_6062758 That orange thing that I am holding is a carrot…..which I dropped as soon as the camera clicked!!!   But I really am getting better!!

OK…one would think that this was enough food.  But noooooo.  Two more dishes arrived…. a pork and vegetable stir fry and a potato-noodle vegetable dish.

_6062763 _6062765  Both were extremely tasty but entirely superfluous.

And then came the cold noodle soup……

_6062764 This colorful concoction had a magnificent flavor but we were simply too full to eat much of it.  To quote Anthony Bourdain….”It was a symphony of a soup!!”

You may have noticed in the previous picture that Jialin is pregnant (due in August).   As soon as I heard this, I knew that I wanted to bring her a quilt.  I had an appropriate  top already pieced, so I quilted it and presented it to her.

_6062768

I am not sure that she knows entirely what it is, but she was very thankful and appreciative!!

SO…..two hours later, and stuffed with food, we left the restaurant and headed for……the bakery  (told you there would be more about this).

This luscious shop is filled with acrylic bins that contain an enormous variety of pastries, ranging from sweet, cream filled buns to savory, beef infused breads.  Many of the bins had English descriptions and Jialin filled in the rest.

When we first walked in we picked up our tray and set of tongs…..

IMG_0232 We then roamed the store, selecting one of these and two of those and having a wonderful time figuring out what was what.

Jialin told us that these cookies were husband and wife cookies.  The wife ones (on the left) are sweet (as it should be) and the husband ones (on the right) are savory (sounds about right)…..

IMG_0234

….and I thought that this bread was gorgeous (regardless of how it tastes)…..

IMG_0233   When we had completed our selections, we took the tray to the check out counter and the clerk meticulously packaged each type of pastry into individual packages.  The cost for everything…..12Y  ($US1.77)

The best news of the day came when Jialin told us that this store is part of a chain of stores and that there is one located across the street from our Carrefour……YIPPPPPEEEEEE!!!!!

When we got back to the apartment, we rested for a couple of hours, spent a few minutes in the office (by the way we were the ONLY ones in there), and then headed back up the street to visit a small (remember that word) park that we had passed several times.

We entered “Lotus Pond Park” and this was the first thing that we saw…..

_6062797 We started walking down one path and FORTY FIVE minutes later we returned to our starting point and I don’t really believe that we covered the entire park.   It was a gorgeous area with lush vegetation.  Here are a few photos from the walk….

_6062793 _6062777 Those flowers are hydrangeas…..in an infinite variety of colors….

_6062786 We came across one canteen-type area where there were 5 or 6 tables of people  (of all ages) painting various ceramic pieces and another table that contained 8 potter’s wheels.  This table drew the greatest crowd as people built pots.   I told Michael that, if I tried it, I could REALLY draw a crowd.   I don’t know if this is always set up, but if I find it on a quiet day, I might give it a try!!!!

_6062784

As we passed one of the gazebos, there was an older man and woman sitting in one corner.  She was singing as he played the traditional stringed instrument called an Er-Hu, a two-stringed fiddle.  The music made a soothing accompaniment to our afternoon constitutional!!

When we had returned to the front of the park we sat down on a bench for Michael to do some reading and for me to work on a quilt that I brought along.

The quilt that I am working on was started by my friend, Pat Kools, who passed away two years ago.   I have decided that I will add some beads to the top and hand quilt it.   I couldn’t help but wonder if Pat ever thought that one of her quilts would end up in China!!!!

While Michael went off to buy a bottle of water, a young girl shyly approached me.  I said “Hello” and she responded.  We both smiled nervously at each other, so I pointed to myself and said “My name is Frances”.  Her eyes brightened as she haltingly said “My name is ****”.    More nervous smiling ensued before she ran over to Father who had been videoing the entire encounter.  I am sure that we will both remember this day!!!!
