Rangoli for inspiration….or maybe not!

Well, I am back in my studio and, more importantly, I am EXCITED to be back in my studio!!

When I heard about the Modern Quilt Guild’s Diamond Challenge, it immediately piqued my interest. I love piecing diamonds and thought it would be fun to do.

I spent a lot of time looking for patterns, especially looking at various Rangoli designs from India.

This is a post that I wrote explaining what Rangoli are…..

I loved this design…..

…but couldn’t come up with an easy way to do the circular bits.

This one also looked interesting…..

…and I even played with it a bit…..

I really like this one, but it would take a lot of intricate graphing and piecing, and frankly, that is not what I want to be doing right now!

I photographed this one on our first trip to India back in 2008…..

…and the design has always appealed to me.

When I laid it out…..

….. I realized that there were going to be some large empty areas that would need something and I didn’t think that I wanted to add flowers. Having said that, I woke up one night and thought “QUILTED MANDALA” designs!! That would solve the problem!

BUT, my mind kept going back to this inspirational wall from some airport, somewhere…..

It has diamonds…..sort of!!

I drew out a similar version….

…and started getting excited.

Come back on Tuesday and we will pick out some fabrics!!

More Stained-Glass Inspiration

A couple of weeks back, I posted about a stained glass inspiration from the book, Geometric Patterns From Churches & Cathedrals”.

Today I found another one……

Wouldn’t it be fun to make a landscape-oriented quilt that made use of a bunch of these “panels”

AHHH…..something else for my “retirement” To-Do list!!

The PERFECT decoration

When I went to Paducah, I had trouble finding a hotel room and ended up staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Metropolis, Illinois….only 15 minutes from the convention center.

It was exciting to cross the Ohio River…..

…and find myself in a brand new state!!

I knew that I had picked the best hotel when I saw the picture that hung in the lobby…..

That is DEFINITELY a quilt waiting to happen!!

Have you seen other hotel art that reminded you of quilts??

Gated church entrance

I have been looking through travel photos, helping Michael to find certain ones for a travel article he is writing.

AND, I came across this photo of a gate entrance at a cathedral in Vienna…..

I “straightened” the photo, so you can see it a bit better….

Now THAT would make a wonderful quilt!!

Cathedral Windows

The other day, I was looking thru a book that I have had for many years. It is called “Geometric Patterns From Churches & Cathedrals”, and is out of print now.

BUT….one of the pages had a photos of this church window….

This design was taken from that window….

Yes, there would be a bunch of Y-seams and some inset circles, but wouldn’t it make a fun quilt??

Especially in solid, brightly colored fabrics!!

Add it to the list!!!
