As I have written before, I love optical illusion quilts and this one is perfect!!

“Saturday Night Fever” bu Summer Rather

The quilting adds a lot as well…..

While the curved piecing in this next quilt is well done…..

Pieced Division at Quiltcon

I LOVE a good pieced quilt and the winners at Quiltcon were excellent examples!!

You had to step away from this quilt to see it, but these log cabins…..

….turned into this amazing quilt…..

“Shadow” by Scott Culley

It certainly deserved the 1st place ribbon!!

Second place was awarded to…..

“Joy” by Cole Whitaker

I had seen this quilt at Houston as well and it is amazing!!

Third place went to this quilt…..

“Vortex Radial” by Audrey Esarey

I have seen many of Audrey’s quilts and they are all spectacular!!!

Other favorite quilts from the Pieced Division included…..

“Asteria” by Nancy Goff

This next quilt had a story behind it…..

“My 2020 Miles Quilt” by Kitty Wilkin

She added a strip of fabric per day, color coordinated to the mileage that she ran that day. She added a pieced person…..

after a certain number of miles. She said that it was a way to motivate her to continue running!

This next quilt was a drafting mistake that turned into a quilt…..

“Glitch” by Amy Friend

And look at the number of inset seams and partial seams in this next piece…..

“Spiraling Into Control” by Tighe Flanagan

All I can say is “oh my”!!!

This next quilt is based on question marks…..

“Too Many Questions” by Liz Kuny

There is a LOT of piecing in this next quilt…..

“Jagged Little Pill” by Amy Friend

One of the things that I love about it is how the quilting hides the way that it was pieced!

This quilt is pleasantly symmetrical….

“Melodeon” by Betsy Vinegrad

Come back tomorrow as we view more pieced quilts!!

Let’s Improvise Some More

Yesterday we took our first look at the Improvisational Quilts from QuiltCon. Let’s enjoy some more today…..

This first one has marvelous quilting…..

“Quilters Workout” by Tania Tanti

Enjoy her artist statement…..

….and her quilting……

This quilt was inspired by Terrazzo tiles…..

“Terrazzo Tile Quilt” by Tammy Pulinec

She certainly nailed that inspiration!!

This next one makes excellent use of recycles jeans and shirts…..

“Poppa, You Got a Bellybutton?” by Donna Blalock

This next one was made for a Mom whose husband had passed. It uses the same basic materials as the previous one, but is so different……

“For Mom” by Erika Mulvenna

Lemon Squeezy is a great homage to lemons…..

“Lemon Squeezy” by Heather Wood

I couldn’t figure out why I appreciated the color palette of this next quilt…..

“Stepping Stones #5″ Boardwalk” by Jan Soules

When I read in her artist statement that we should “delight in the fresh air of a summer’s day”, I realized that the colors put me in SUMMER and I am READY!!

This next quilt reminded the maker of summers on the Italian coast……

“Lido” by Patricia Heath

I have left my favorite quilt in this category for last…..

“Peacock Symphony” by Sharon Swanson

First of all, I LOVE peacocks, but I also LOVE the FMQ…..

Isn’t that all GORGEOUS???

There were many other Improv quilts that caught my attention, but we will stop with these.

Come back on Monday and we will tackle the “pieced” category…. one of my favorites.

Let’s Improvise!!

If you have read my blog for any time, you have probably figured out that I am NOT good at improvisation, so these quilts are amazing to me on so many levels!!

The first place winner was…..

“Reconceived” by Jennifer Candon

Jennifer says that by letting go, the piece is strengthened!!

The second place ribbon was given to….

“Lahaina” by Patty Simmons

…and the third place ribbon was awarded to…..

“Joy Bubble Quilt” by

Other quilts that I liked were…..

“Circles II” by Martina Hilgert-Vervoort

This next on is a favorite….

“Concrete Jungle” by Sheila Frampton-Cooper

As you might guess, I particularly enjoyed the quilting…..

This next one reminds me of music. Personally, I see a jazz trio!!

“Composition 2” by Laurie Paquin

I found the colors of this next piece very appealing…..

“Lineage” by Bruce Coldstone

I really love this next quilt….

“Where She Stops, Nobody Knows” by Patti Coppock

Again, the quilting adds so much to the design…..

These stained glass arches are wonderful……

“Arches” by Nancy Lambert

Again, I love the quilting…..

More Applique from QuiltCon

Yesterday we looked at the winners and some of the other applique quilts from QuiltCon. Today, let’s finish them up!!

I love the shapes in this quilt. I would NEVER have thought of making them like this!!

“Odd Man Out” by Andrew Love

The couplets of color are perfect in this next quilt…..

“Moon Pie Mood Ring” by Laura Henneberry

These rings of color are beautifully hand appliqued…..

“Drift” by Linda Branting

This quilt used the fabrics from last year’s Wyndham Fabric Challenge.

“Exposing My Truths” by Lori Tourschere

Lori pieced and quilted the background before the applique overlay was added.

I don’t know about you but I get some of my best ideas while in the shower and that is what happened to Tia Curtis……

“Ideas In The Shower” by Tia Curtis

This is what she wrote about it…..

I love large-scale applique, but sometimes basting the pieces to get them ready for needle-turn applique is a bit of a pain. I was thinking of how I could make this easier on myself while I was in the shower and it came to me! Why don’t I baste the pieces with my longarm? I tried this exact technique out as soon as I threw on some clothes. I still need to tweak some things but overall the experiment was a success. I can’t wait to try it again with an even BIGGER design!!

We all look forward to seeing the next quilt!!

This next quilt is another where the background was quilted first and then the appliques were added….

“Plinko” by Steph Skardal

This next quilt is about a cancer diagnosis and represents the “boulders” that she had to climb….

“What the Hill?” by Erin Kroeker

This is another example of how quilting has helped with physical healing!!

Come back tomorrow and we will look at the pieced division.
