Pictorial Quilts – my favorite

I LOVE pictorial quilts. I am amazed at where people find inspiration and how they turn that inspiration into amazing quilts!!

The category we are looking at today is the “LARGE” Pictorial Quilts…..

Prepared to be awed!!

FIRST PLACE…….

These two quilters have had quilts in Houston for as many years as I can remember. All of them include children and dogs….a fun combination…..

“Joyful Spring” by Hiroko Miyama with Masanobu Miyama

This quilt is REVERSE appliqued with over 4,000 pieces, 1,900 leaves and 300 apple tree flowers…..OH MY!!

I love how they did the leaves, grouping them together with various colors!!

And look at the joy on this child’s face….

\

SECOND PLACE……

This quilt is inspired by the spiral column in a cathedral in Ferentino, Italy……

“Ferentino” by Janet Fogg

It was hard to tell, but I believe that the columns were hand painted…..

It was a striking quilt to see up close!!

THIRD PLACE…..

This quilt is an interpretation of the “Beauty and the Beast” story…..

“Oak and Rose” by Becky Prior, quilted by Jackie Brown

There were many techniques involved….hand applique, embellishment, embroidery, painting, inking, drawing, Broderie Perse and reverse applique!!

I love that she used whatever technique she needed to achieve the mastserpiece!

“Weir Fishing” by Debora Barlow

This quilt was started in 2019 with dyeing fabrics and collecting organza. In 2023, she started working on it again, using cotton and organza for the transparency in the water, and then using hand-applique to add the birds.

This fused mosaic applique contains more than 40,000 1/2-inch squares!!

“Serenity” by Anita Armstrong

There are so many whimsical touches in this quilt, including otters….

….and other underwater creatures….

This was probably the most striking quilt of the entire show…..

“Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Man” by Alexandra Curran

These portraits of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, are a fitting tribute to the man, showing his innocence when first elected and the toll that carrying his country on his shoulders has exacted!

A photo from 1910 is the inspiration for this quilt…..

“Another Day” by Gloria Zirges

I love the details on the oxen….especially their eyelashes….

“Cowgirl Runway” by Margery Hedges

In particular, I was drawn to this wonderful stone wall…..

“Cliff PAlace Dreams” by Susan Madden with “Blocks Without Borders” Art Quilt Group

I have seen many quilts created in this manner (where a photo is split into sections), but this one is one of the best!!

I love the details added by the quilting….

We will end this category with a Sunflower…..

“No Plan Bee” by Barbara Lange

You have to get close to see it, but the center of the flower is made of tiny pieced shapes….

…and the radiating quilting is outstanding…..

There are plenty more Pictorial quilts left to see….although in the “Small” category.

Be sure to come back…..
