Slump be gone!!

Two weeks ago, I wrote about my creative paralysis and asked for suggestions…..

BOY did you guys come through!!

There were so many wonderful ideas that I decided to share them with you.

Get ready to be motivated!!!!

Kathy said that she works on something mindless. Then her brain gets bored and starts sending out little teasers to kick her into gear again!!

I love that…..trick the mind!!

Several people suggested taking a walk. Pamela added that I should listen to music while doing that!!

I do enjoy a good walk to clear my head!

Sharon said that her machine is in the shop for five weeks and now she is full of ideas!!

I don’t really want my machine to be in the shop, but I like the idea of taking a break!!

Susan also suggested taking a break to read, watch movies, and talk walks. But she adds that on a morning of her choosing, she makes a decision to JUST START DOING!!

I have found that too. Sometimes you need to JUST DO IT!! I guess Nike had it right!!

Laura suggested that I go back to the beginning and think about what turned me on in the beginning. She suggested keeping it fun and light hearted!!

I think that keeping it fun is the big key in this statement!!]

Sue suggested spending some time with a friend in her studio. No pressure about what is next….just enjoy and pay attention to what gave you the most ZING!!

Sue is a local friend and I almost invited myself to her house!!

Dotty suggested looking thru quilt magazines for ideas.

This reminded me that I was planning to “delete” some magazines from my shelves, so maybe I should start looking thru them now!!

And, Kimberly suggested doing something creative that I haven’t done before.

My problem with THIS idea is that I have too many things that I want to try and I get bogged down in decision making again!!

So, now you have a bunch of suggestions for breaking out of the creative slump…..

Which suggestion will you take??

  1. I like the quilt magazine idea. I was in a bit of a slump and I watched the recording of my guild’s monthly “Show and Tell Inspirations”. Right away I found myself in my sewing loft, inspired to quilt. Seeing other’s works motivates me. Also, listening to a lecture. Can’t wait to hear your talk at the end of this month!!!

  2. Write down your projects, new ideas, etc on scraps of paper and put in a container. When you need to make a decision, pick one out and do it.

Start organizing scraps. I keep fabric from projects in a box and every once in a while, sit down and start organizing. I cut into sizes, biggest I can get out of material down to one in square. So I have scrappy material all ready pre-cut and sorted to go. It’s fairly mindless work and often inspires me and/or let’s me think about the items I have already made and the feeling when finished.
