The Other Florida

Back at the Sewing Expo in Atlanta, I enjoyed the SAQA exhibit called “THE OTHER FLORIDA”, which explored the beauty and fun of the state.

“Coffee Buddies” by Gail Casaday

I am up early each morning, enjoying my coffee while sitting quietly outside on the patio. If I go back into the house for something, I’m likely to find one or more frogs snuggling up to my warm coffee mug!

How FUN!!

…..

“Beware The Eyes” by Sue Rednead

This piece has an amazing 3-D quality, even though it is entirely flat!!

…..

“Last Hurrah” by Karol Kusmaul

Much texture was achieved by using Blanket Stitch around each of pieces.

…..

“There She Grows” by Kat Campau

…..

“An Uncommon View” by Dariel Dodge-Distelkamp

I particularly liked the quilting…..

…..

“Among the Mangroves” by Doris Hulse

I love the structure of this quilt as it emphasizes the functions of mangroves: protecting the land from coastal erosion, providing a nursery for marine life, and filtering toxins from the water.

However, I tend to have a volatile reaction to Mangroves….

Back in the 90’s, we took a family vacation to Florida and the Bahamas, spending several days on a sailboat in the Keys. At dusk one night, we went lobster fishing, and the skipper sank the small boat we were in. We were in a cut through between two islands and thought for a while that we would have to spend the night in one of the Mangrove forests. Fortunately, we used a light I grabbed as it floated past, and signaled to a fishing boat that came to rescue us.

So, talking about Mangroves puts me back in the ocean!!

The Beat Goes On

This was a fun exhibit at the Sewing & Quilt Expo called….

“Haight-Ashbury” by Carol Hancuh

I was drawn to how she portrayed the crowd…..

Not a lot of detail but the idea comes across perfectly!!

…..

She used the same idea in…

“The March” by Carol Hancuh

…..

Another poignant reminder of the times was this quilt….

“Rosa” by Carol Hancuh

……

“Blue Moon” by Carol Hancuh

…..

This corner was my favorite……

“Devil with a Blue Dress On”…… “Girl from Ipanema”……. “Tan Shoes & Pink Shoelaces”

In each case, she used wondeful three-dimensional details to add to the flavor!

…..

“Wipeout” by Carol Hancuh

…..

“Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yelow Polka Dot Bikini” by Carol Hancuh

This was a fun exhibit, taking me back to the sounds of my childhood!!

Keep coming back…..more next week!!

SAQA – Abstraction: Textural Elements

At our guild meeting, someone mentioned that the Atlanta Sewing & Quilt Expo was happening later in the week. Since things on the accounting front are pretty much in hand, I made a last-minute decision to check it out.

The Expo is designed as a vendor’s market, but there are always a few quilts that travel with it.

Over the next few weeks, I will show you some of my favorites from the different exhibits.

These are from the SAQA exhibit “Abstraction: Textural Elements…..

“Open Air” by Paola Machetta

I love how the quilting adds so much to the structural design of the quilt.

…..

I was interested in this next one as it was made from overlays of sheer cottons and organzas…..

“A Slice of Sun” by Lena Meszaros

Her artist statement said…. “I particularly like the moment when the sun rises over the city. Before that, everything is dull and time is on hold. And then the magic happens….

I think she did an amazing job of rendering these thoughts into fabric!

…..

“Summer Journey #2” by Lenny van Eijk

Again, I appreciate how the straight-line quilting adds so much to the design.

…..

“Rooflines” by Jan McBrien Tetzlaff

I admire the big-stitch quilting…..

It adds so much to the piece, and is something that I long to try in the future!!

…..

This simple top was painted with broad brushstrokes, using a Broom Plant across a plain white field…..

“Gesture” by Linda Colsh

It is very simple, but carries an excitement as well.

…..

If they were going for texture, this quilt certainly fit the prompt….

“Rocking & Rolling” by Isabelle Wiessler

The hand-dyed and hand-painted background is the perfect backdrop for the quilting!!

Here is a closer look at the stitching….

….

Come back tomorrow, and we will look at a fun exhibit entitled “The Beat Goes On”!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

In this blog, I post stories about creativity, techniques, tools of the trade, and lots more about the wonderful art of quilting. If you are enjoying these posts, please subscribe to be notified of each new blog as it becomes available.

An Unexpected Award

Back in February, I told the story of entering a quilt I considered a “throw-away” quilt… one I’d just given up on…

As I said in that post, I was excited to know that it wouldn’t be forever locked away in my studio but would actually see the light of day in a gallery!!

“Dots Down the Drain”

Imagine my great surprise when I received a text on the opening night that said: “You received a merit award”!!

You could have knocked me over with a feather!!

AND, I was even more excited to find out that it was the “Nancy Lukasiewicz Award for Fine Craft”.

Because I knew and loved Nancy Lukasiewicz!!

I knew her first as the director of the Lyndon House, the tiny building that housed the arts in Clarke County, GA. But under Nancy and her husband’s leadership, that small house was transformed into a gorgeous art facility with a community room (where our guild meets), 6 open studios (one of which houses our guild Charity Bee), and several large exhibition halls!!

I also knew Nancy as a soccer mom, tirelessly following the team as our sons played on a Club team.

This line from her obituary describes her best…..

Nancy was an incredibly calm, grounded, supportive person who always remained positive.

This is how I remember her and why I am so thrilled to win an award named after her!!

And I have to say, having my quilt’s photo in the Exhibition Book is definitely a THRILL…

…….

Come back on Tuesday….. I want to think further about how we judge our creations!!

The quilts of Victoria Findlay Wolfe

As I walked thru the National Quilt Museum, I enjoyed seeing several quilts from Victoria Findlay Wolfe. I have just learned of work in the last few years and have enjoyed watching her process on Instagram.

This is a more traditional quilt from her…..

“Soigne’ ” by Victoria Findlay Wolfe

….

“Mindful Balance” by Victoria Findlay Wolfe”

Her notes about this quilt…. “I enjoy piecing the same color over and over so that the seam becomes an important line in the impact of the quilt.

You definitely see that train of thought in her special exhibit called “Option Expedition”….

Here is the “signature” quilt of the exhibit….

All of the quilts in the room follow a similar theme. Looking at the room in panorama, you see the extent of her creativity…..

Each wall contained an amazing display….

They even provided a place for you to try such creativity yourself….

….but I am afraid that my mind doesn’t work that way!!

The other question that blazed in my mind was “How many yards of red fabric did she purchase??!”
