One BUSY guild!!

Last week, I told you about my trip to Denton, Texas to speak and give a machine quilting workshop.

What I want to talk about today is the Denton Quilt Guild…..

….and ALL of the amazing things that they are doing!!

The guild has over 200 members and they are active in EVERYTHING!!

Their charitable work includes making Christmas Stockings for underprivileged children….

Last year they gave away 1,910 stockings and they are already up to 1,300 for this year!!

They have been involved in a donation quilt that will support another local group

…if I remember correctly, it is for a VFW post.

This next project is one of my favorites…..

Our Storybooks and Quilts To Go program brings reading to life—one quilt at a time! The Denton Quilt Guild has gathered a special collection of over 70 children’s books with quilt-related themes, each paired with a handcrafted quilt made by our talented members. As new books are added, guild volunteers design and sew matching quilts to keep the collection growing.

During the school year, the books and quilts travel to local schools and libraries, where teachers and librarians use them to spark imagination and learning. In the summer, they’re available to museums, libraries, and children’s groups across the community.

Isn’t this a WONDERFUL idea!!

I certainly hope that they have MY favorite kids book about quilting….

They have two fundraisers. The first is a booth full of goodies at the “Alternative Craft Fair” sponsored by a local church.

But, my favorite fundraiser is this…. Every so often, they have a “garage sale” that includes not only items that the guild members want to get rid of, but also all of the items that have been donated to the guild thru the year. These donations come from people moving and downsizing or from the estates of quilters. Guild members can attend the first day, and then it is opened to the public on the following days.

One of the meeting ideas that I want to bring to my guild is a “business card” station….

Anyone looking for a particular service can grab a card to get all of the needed information!!

They have monthly workshops, and also monthly “Continuing Education” classes that are taught by guild members…

The previous month, they had made name tags and several were in evidence….

Finally, they always display quilts at a local “Arts & Jazz Festival”. There is usually a challenge issued, and this year it was self-portraits. A number of them appeared during show and tell….

Aren’t they fun!!

I left the meeting that night with my head buzzing with new ideas and my heart filled with memories of the new friends that I had met!!

And….isn’t that what a quilt guild is SUPPOSED to do??

One of my favorite things about quilting is motivating others and helping them in their quilting journey. As part of this endeavor, I LOVE to present programs and workshops to groups and guilds around the world. All of my programs work well with Zoom meetings, and I would love to speak to your group.

Time well spent!!

This past week I had the privilege of spending three days with members of the Denton Quilt Guild in Denton, Texas….

Now, I was already excited about returning to my home-ground of Texas, but getting to spend time with these ladies was the icing on the cake!!

My arrival at the hotel was met with this wonderful hall carpet….

…definitely a sign of good things to come!!

My first task was to empty my carry-on suitcase so that all of the quilts had a few moments to breathe before being packed up for the meeting…..

After a sweet dinner with a group of guild members, we headed to the local arts community building where the meeting was held. The room was a small art gallery and contained numerous art pieces, including these two fun tile designs….

…and this very interesting, hanging sculpture…..

There was a good crowd there for the meeting…..

…and I VERY much enjoyed presenting “Viewing the World Thru Quilt Colored Glasses”!!

The next day, I was ferried to the “Box Car Quilts” shop and creative center, and spent 6 fun hours teaching about free-motion quilting….

This room had the PERFECT set up, with a place to show videos of the various techniques we were trying….

…and lots of room for machines and all other accoutrements!!

These ladies were SO willing to try new things…..

…and I came away highly encouraged with the progress that was made as the day progressed.

The quilt store itself….“Box Car Quilts” , carried an amazing array of products,

The store is at the end of a long country road, but the area is dotted with several conference/retreat centers and other amazing facilities for quilters.

Oh, to live in Denton!!

But, as usual, it was fun to reach the top of the escalator in the Atlanta Airport…..

…and be met by my sweet husband, Michael!!

Now, this is not the last you will hear about the Denton Quilters Guild!! I was so impressed with the group and their ideas, and my plan is to do another post very soon.
