Have you noticed how Pictorial Quilts have become all the rage? As proof, pictorial quilts comprised two of the largest categories at IQF. These are some of the ones in the “small” division…..

The artist’s statement for this first quilt was so cute…. “This started out to be a cowgirl quilt. Then I decided it needed a fence, a horse, and a couple of kids. As the story developed, the little girl had an attitude because she was mad at her brother for hiding the carrot and teasing the horse. All the horse wants to know is “Where’s My Carrot?”!!

Can’t you just see her mind creating the story as the quilt grew?

This next quilt was quite small and I loved the bounty of ribbon flowers.

This is how I want my flower gardens to look…..a cacophony of colors!

This “sisters” quilt came from a photo that sat in the maker’s studio for 10 years…….

I can certainly identify with this statement. Sometimes you just have to wait until you are ready to use that one inspiration!!

This quilt makes me want to go hiking again…..

…while this one makes me long to return to Venice……

The reflections in the water were so well done and the quilting was unbelievably tiny…..

This next quilt was made with professionally printed fabric and then quilted with Isacord embroidery thread. The thing that made this quilt stand out to me was the 3-dimensional look to the dog……

It looked as if she was about to hop out of the quilt and join me on the show floor.

Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry has re-invented herself over the years and this new technique is one of my favorites. It contains all sorts of fabrics, including hand-dyed, painted, digitally printed, and professionally printed.

The incredible part of this piece is the feeling of hair on the deer…..

It looks so soft!!

Yesterday we looked at 5 of the quilts in the Maching Quilting Division of IQF. Let’s finish them off today…..

This first quilt won the Blue Ribbon and it deserved the accolade….

Just look at the detail in this block….

…..not to mention the borders….

The next quilt is simple in design and, once again, provides a great canvas for free-motion quilting…..

In this next quilt, the quilting did a wonderful job of continuing the floral motif into the background…..

The same goes for this quilt. I appreciate that the quilting echos the block designs….

The Third-Place ribbon went to this stunning, low-volume quilt…….

There are SO many quilting designs showcased in the project…..

I could have spent hours studying each of these outstanding quilts!!

I DEFINITELY need to “UP-My-GAME!!!”

As you might expect, each year I look forward to the Machine Quilting Category at the International Quilt Festival. This year was no exception!!

I love quilts like this one where the shapes are simple but the quilting is insane!!…..

I would love to try something like it sometime in my life!!

This quilt won the 3rd Place Ribbon and is a staggering example of creativity…..

Just look at the details added in the embellishments…..

And the final touch…..this great prairie point edging…..

The quilting on this next one was based on Mexican tiles…..

There is some great grid quilting on this one…..

I appreciate the colors in this next quilt……

….but look at all of these quilted pebbles…..

One of my favorites in this category was this one…..

I LOVE the colors, the design, and ESPECIALLY the varied quilting….

I was surprised that there weren’t more landscape quilts in this year’s International Quilt Festival, but there were still some good ones…..

This quilt maker used hand and machine applique and embroidery to create this magical scene……

This embodiment of a Japanese garden is completely hand pieced and embroidered!!!

This quilt makes me want to go on a road trip……

Look at the fun piecing in the sky background…..

This next nightscape makes use of many techniques, including painting, embroidery and applique….

Look at the fun digitized quilting design in the moon…..

This collage-style quilt gives off a peaceful and serene vibe…..

….while this quilt makes me want to go for a long walk in the woods….

Some day I hope to make a quilt portraying water so I am keenly aware of the different methods that are used to make it realistic. This one is perfect…..

I don’t know about you, but I adore quilts that feature flowers so “In Full Bloom” is an exhibit that I wait for each year.

The flowers in this first quilt are wonderful…..

…but work well against this background…..

I THINK that this background is a piece of fabric and not pieced but it is SO effective!!

I plan my flower beds to be a cacophony of colors and types of flowers, and this quilt reminds me greatly of that……

The applique was perfect and the quilting added a great touch to the quilt…..

This sunflower quilt is another example of turning a panel into a Kaleidoscope quilt……

This is the panel that was used…..

I talked about this technique in a previous post….

We have spent a lot of time in tropical areas where bananas are grown so this quilt resonated….

I appreciate the piecing in this quilt!!

This final quilt was simple in design but was extremely effective…..

What a fun way to showcase floral fabrics!!

Okay….we are working our way through the categories and exhibits from the International Quilt Festival. Tomorrow we will look at some “traditional with a twist” quilts!!
