3-D….Oh my!!

My friend Andrea posts a daily blog that you should REALLY check out!!

A few weeks ago, she and her bell-ringing group visited the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. One of the exhibits was “Light Bloom”, an installation of sculptures by HYBYCOZO. They are laser-cut metal boxes that are lighted inside.

The first one that she showed caught my eye…..

Wouldn’t it be amazing to make a quilt look like one of these boxes?

OR even make something along the lines of the designs on the floor??

Yes, Andrea….you said in your post that I was already drooling and you were right!!

HYBYCOZO is the collaborative studio of artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk. Their work is typically illuminated and celebrates the inherent beauty of form and pattern and represents their ongoing journey in exploring the myriad dimensions of geometry.

If you have a few minutes, check out their website, and especially their gallery….

Lessons from a Rock Garden

I love when readers respond to my posts and Lynne told a great story in response to this photo…..

Have a read…..

I made a lovely rock garden at the back end of my yard yesterday. No plan. Just spontaneous. Just, what if I do that? Oh, I need another such and such a rock. (I go find one.) Such joy. Such fun and satisfaction. At bedtime I wondered, why can’t I do that with fabric? How did I decide fabric is too precious to play with? Why can’t I just go find another piece of fabric (in my huge stockpile) like I go find another perfect rock? Playing with fabric SHOULD be an adventure. Play. I’m hoping to transfer the rock garden adventure to fabric adventure.

Just look at her wonderful rock garden……

You can see where she “pieced” the rocks together…..

What a lovely garden ……

….and amazing reminder that we must move out of that comfort zone and try things!!

Thanks Lynne….. I needed that!!

Scrappy Strip Piecing

I am hoping to finish working with all of my 2.5-inch scraps during the month of September and have already started thinking about which drawer I want to head to next.

Looking at the over-stuffed drawers of strips…..

….I am thinking that I should start thinking in that direction.

I have previously made two pineapple quilts…..

…..so that really isn’t in the plans.

Maybe that is why I was drawn to this photo…….

Could THIS be the pattern for my next scrap quilt?

I will do some more thinking about it and we will see!!!

New quilt idea..

I know, I know….the last thing that I need is a new quilt idea….

But hear me out!!

Sometime in my life, I downloaded a photo of these designs….

At various times in my life, I have looked at them and thought about what kind of quilt they would make.

Look in particular at the top right one…..

It wouldn’t necessarily be easy to piece as there are a bunch of curves, but look what happens when you put a bunch of them together……

I especially like the circles that appear in the design.

But, as I thought about all of those curves, I started wondering what would happen if you changed them to straight lines…..

It doesn’t have quite the same feel, but would sure be easier to piece!!

And, if you squint, you can still see the circles!

Wouldn’t it be fun in a color-wash type of design?

.

So, will I ever make this quilt?

Probably not.

Did I have fun thinking about it and creating a plan?

ABSOLUTELY!!

I used to feel guilty about planning quilts that I will never make but I have finally come to grips with the fact that imaginary creating is just as important as actual creating!!

Do you agree?

Scraps in the Bathroom

I love walking into new bathrooms in random places….such as the Toronto airport.

On our last trip, I was greeted with this wall…..

Just look at all of the block sizes and orientations and how they fit together into a cohesive design……

This may need some further exploration!!

I know….I know…. I’ll add it to my ever-growing To-Do list!!
