Linda and I noticed an inordinate number of “Hexie” quilts….there must have been a memo!!
By the way….it is hand quilted…..
Continuing in the Hexie theme…..
“Rainbow Hexies” by Sally Robinson, quilted by Helen Rode
Her challenge was to use the same 12 fabrics in each big hexagon to mimic a color wheel.
Unfortunately, the convention center lights washed out the colors, but this triangle quilt was stunning!!
“Trichotomy” by Barbara Oliver Hartman
From triangles to circles (distorted ones)….
“Kiwi Peel” by Ben Darby“Hill Country Spring” by Kathy Kennedy
Kathy used the technique where you layer 6 panels to create hexagon blocks that are arranged around a 7th panel. The exciting difference in this one was that the “panel” is actually a digital version of a painting by her husband, Ira. What a fun idea!!
“Beausoleil (Lovely Fair Sun)” by Mary Lorenz
This quilt made use of some jaw-dropping machine embroidery
Just look at this border…..
“Carousel for Three” by Marilyn Lidstrom Larson, with Karen Boe and Barbara Simons
I love the thread colors on the dark brown fabric….
….and the Carousel Horses in the border….
“Reimagined” by Debra Nicklaus, quilted by Debby Eades
The pattern was drafted with the idea of large open spaces for quilting…..
That’s all for today.
Come back tomorrow for more hexies, log cabins and incredible improvisational piecing.

One of my favorite categories (at any show) are the pieced quilts. Piecing has been and is near and dear to my heart!!
I highlighted 32 quilts in this category so we will spend 4 days looking at them.
GET READY TO BE AMAZED!!
Let’s start with the big winners…..
Frist Place went to….
“Tunnel Vision” by Clem Buzick with Geth Nufer
The artist statement says “Tunnel Vision is an explosion of color, texture and dimension. It is easy to get drawn in!”
Yes it is!! The center section is not only intricately pieced, but the quilting adds so much dimension and interest…..
The corners and borders continue that trend….
Second Place was lots of curved line piecing…
“Citrus Zing” by Linda Steele
She says….”Juicy fruits on a plate and refreshing drinks are what you need on a hot summer day”
Once again, look at the quilting here….
This exquisite “English Paper Pieced” quilt was award the 3rd place ribbon…
“My Secret Garden” by Megumi Mizuno
She began the quilt in 2001 and picked it up again during the Covid “stay-at-home” restrictions
You will not truly appreciate this quilt until you get closer and see the fun embroideries that are scattered over it’s surface…..
There are over 12,000 1 cm (.4 inch) hexagons!!
This quilt was awarded one of the three “Judges Choice” awards….
“Millstones” by Tetiana Bohachuk
Her quilt is designed to embody the resilience of the Ukrainian people, and contains Ukrainian folk motifs.
The perfection of the blocks is amazing…..
….as are the motifs….
Other quilts of interest in this category included….
“Spiraling Into Cerise” by Barb Sorensen
We met Barbara and enjoyed talking to her about her quilts….
That’s right…. I said QUILTS….plural. She also had this one displayed….
“Sunrise” by Barbara Sorensen
I loved her artist statement for this one….. “I hand painted and discharged fabrics for this project in order to build a pallet of diverse patterns in similar colors and BECAUSE IT’S FUN”
I LOVE those last three words!!
The quilting on both quilts was exquisite…
Next is this pink and green delight…..
A Year In Hand” by Margaret Brockbank, Quilted by Maika Christensen
The piecing is hand sewn “English Paper Piecing” and it took approximately 2,000 hours to make. Her daughter used her skills as a machine quilter to finish the project.
Final one for today is…..
“Getting to Know Hue” by Susan Pennington, pattern by Nancy Rink
As with all the quilts before this one, the machine quilting adds so much to the design…..
Come back tomorrow for more from the Pieced Category at IQF…..

When I think of Cathedral Windows, I think of lots of handwork and fabric manipulation, but not the way that Lisa Ellis makes them!!
Here are a few of the quilts…..be prepared to be wowed!!
This one was made to be reminiscent of Champagne bubbles!!!
“Effervescence” by Lisa Ellis
This artwork captures the vibrancy and beauty of the color wheel!!
“Glow” by Lisa Ellis
In this quilt, she used the blocks to create and inviting beach scene with sandy shores, cool tea waters, and cloudy skies…..
“Beach Textures” by Lisa Ellis
Look at the wonderful fabrics used in this piece….
This next quilt was Lisa’s first exploration of the mock Cathedral Window block…..
“Radiance” by Lisa Ellis
In the next quilt, she limited the color palette and found that strategic placing of fabric colors made distinct shapes emerge…..
“Midnight Blooms” by Lisa Ellis
This one was a tribute to quilter, Yvonne Porcella….
“Church Windows for YP” by Lisa Ellis
This quilt explores the color spectrum and gradations using Cherrywood Hand Dyed fabrics…..
“The Full Monty” by Lisa Ellis
This one explores the use of start black and white…..
“Chain Reaction” by Lisa Ellis
The falling colored petals in the next quilt evoke the joyous image of confetti thrown in celebration!!
“Confetti” by Lisa Ellis
I did an exploration of her work and found two books, one a smaller book that shows photos of her quilts and gives directions for making the blocks using her technique…..
As I said, these were gorgeous and certainly sparked an interest in me…. YES ANOTHER interest!!
