More Wyndham challenge quilts…

Yesterday we enjoyed the Winners from the Wyndham Fabric Challenge. Today let’s look at some of the spectacular quilts that didn’t win!

I particularly enjoy the quilts that featured the darker colors in the challenge.

“Always & Forever” by Tara Evans

This double-wedding ring design is made with squares and rectangles and the yellow circle is the PERFECT accent!!

“My Wild Violet Eye” by MaraBeth Soneson

This is artist description….

“Sprout” by Susan Braverman

The circular composition of this piece is great!

The intricate piecing of this next quilt appeals to me greatly……

“Unboxed or I Want Moiré” by Heather Akerberg

I was puzzled by the name of the quilt, wondering what “Moiré” is. Here is Heather’s explanation…..

The Moiré effect happens when a ruled pattern is overlaid with a similar pattern…. The result is a wavy appearance

The quilting is also done in overlays…..

The maker of the next quilt described it as “blobs of color that glisten in the sun”……

“Glisten” by Judy Chaffee

As I always say….INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE”!!

This next quilt was appealing because it was so different from the others…..

“Garden Under the October Moon” by Tzitzi Bejarano

This is her artist statement…..

These colors are vessels of memory, evoking the walls of my workshop, the blossoms in my grandmother’s garden, the fabrics from my aunt’s decor, my uncles’ homes during a transient chapter, and the paintings gracing my parent’s walls. Each stitch is a tribute to these colors, immortalizing the luminosity of my journey that commenced under the enchanting October moon.

How Cool!!

“Stellar” by Maureen Logan

I particularly love how the quilting adds so much to the design.

Finally for today……

“Strike Slip” by Carla Resnick

The inspiration for this quilt is the aftermath of an earthquake on a strike slip fault!! So Interesting!!

Come back tomorrow as we finish this category up….

Wyndham Fabric Challenge….

If you have followed my blog, you will know that I entered my quilt into the QuiltCon Wyndham Fabric Challenge….

“Catching A Dream”

Sadly, it was NOT accepted into the challenge!!

BUT, let’s spend a few days looking at the quilts that were.

To remind you, the rules stated that we had to use at least three of these six fabrics….

This quilt won the first prize ribbon……

“Overprint” by Betsy Vinegrad

She did an amazing job of creating transparency among the fabrics. I NEVER even saw that as an option!!

And the quilting is amazing as well!!

Second prize went to…..

“Blended” by Fran Gulick

The perfection in this quilt is astounding!!

Third place…..

“Local Density 01” by Charles Cameron

Just look at all of the improv piecing!!

So, those were the winners. Here are a few of my favorites….

“Well, Sheet” by Matthew Friesz

This quilter is known as @TheQuiltyArchitect. He always brings his architecture training into his quilts and I haven’t seen one that I don’t like!!

This next quilt…..

“Murmuration” by Tamara Stunnell

I loved her inspiration…..

I was inspired by a cake decoration that created the effect of triangles moving in waves as the cake was spun. The challenge was to produce that same movement on a flat surface.

She CERTAINLY accomplished her desire!!

This next AMAZING quilt is made up of 1/8th inch strips…..yes….you read that right!!

“Maybe?” by Isabelle Selak

When she was contemplating the quilt, she thought about what would deem it as a success? The answer was “if she LEARNED something”.

I so love and appreciate that attitude!!

Probably my favorite quilt in this exhibit was…..

“Ocean Dance 2” by Linda Steele

There are SO many fun details in the quilt, from this sea creature…..

….to the wonderful quilting designs used…..

Come back tomorrow and we will spend some time with these fabrics.

And the WINNERS are….???

This past weekend, I drove to Raleigh, North Carolina and spent 2 days at QuiltCon……

As usual, the convention center was wonderful, the vendors inspirational, and the quilts were amazing!

Please join me over the new few weeks as I show you some of my favorites from the show.

BUT FIRST……the Winners!!

This first quilt was awarded the “MQG Excellence Award” and it was definitely EXCELLENT…..

“Anechoic” by Janice Reimer

Janice said that it was a lesson in color theory that took her out of her color zone.

Best Hand Quilting was awarded to……

“Solomon’s Stripes” by Ethylene Ziegler

A close-up of the quilting shows why…..

Just look at how even all of those stitches are. Better her than me!!!

Best Original Modern Design was awarded to……

“Candy Pop” by Kelly Spell

The technical work on this quilt was worthy of the ribbon…..

Best Machine Quilting was awarded to…..

“Cloudy Night Sky” by Yvonne Fuchs

The quilting was done on a domestic machine and is simple, but very well done. You can actually see it better on the back…..

Best of Show was awarded to……

“What Will We Use as Weapons: A List of School Supplies” by Ginny Robinson

Here is the back…..

Interestingly, I did not see the outline of a person in the quilting until just now!

Tomorrow we will start with the Wyndham Fabric Challenges…….
