Can’t believe she is graduating!!

Back in 2017, I started quilting with my Pastor’s young daughter, Claire….

I would pick her up from school one day each week. We would arrive at the house, have a tortilla or two with spicy pimento cheese, and head upstairs to pick fabrics and sew!! We continued this tradition until life fell apart in 2020….you remember that don’t you?

Well, amazingly, that young woman is graduating from high school next month…..

and….she NEEDS A QUILT!!

I wanted to make something with bright colors and big daisy flowers and was originally thinking about only using scraps. Maybe an Irish chain with flowers in the alternating blocks. This was what I came up with in Electric Quilt…

But the more I thought about it, the more I decided I didn’t want to use only scraps… at least not colored ones.

THEN I started wondering about making the chain in Black and White with the flowers being bright colors….

Since she is a soccer player with a college scholarship, the black and white will be reminiscent of the balls!!

So, I leave for my guild retreat next week, and this is the first project on my list.

As I looked at my 2.5-inch scrap squares, I realized that there were TONS of black and white ones, along with a number of these 3-patches already pieced….

When I got ready to pack the project up, I started with all of the squares in one box….

….a stack of white fabrics for backgrounds on the flower blocks, a stack of black and white fabrics and a stack of other neutral black/greys….

And, of course, a nice stack of BRIGHT fabrcis for the flowers…..

It all went into a large tote….

…along with a bolt of Wonder Under for the appliqued flowers.

SO…..project number 1 READY TO GO!!

Using some strip scraps!

Back in July, I looked at my strip scraps and realized I had an inordinate number of brown scraps, but whenever I have used brown before, it’s made a BORING quilt. Don’t want to do THAT again.

Then I saw a picture on Facebook of a quilt using brown with touches of red. Now THAT sounded interesting.

I made a few prototype blocks to see how they looked…..

And I could see there were many possibilities with this design.

Then, life got busy, and it was relegated to a UFO Box….

Now, when I got ready to work on it again, I made a whole series of videos about my excellent idea for piecing the strip sets without wasting tons of fabric.

BUT, between moving to a new phone AND to a new computer, those videos have vanished into thin air!! Actually, they are probably floating somewhere out there in the ether-world, but I can’t find them!

So, I will tell you that it was cut from strip sets….

….. and show you the finished quilt top……

I had a lot of fun moving the blocks around, trying to come up with a design I loved.

To make my “future self” happy, I went ahead and put together a simple backing…..

…using up MORE of my brown fabrics.

AND, I even made the binding….

Now it resides in an empty drawer, awaiting motivation to get it quilted…..

It was a fun project to work on because, for the most part, it was mindless sewing, and that was EXACTLY what I needed!

A CLEAN scrap basket!!

Well, I finally DID IT!!!

After a year of procrastination, I tackled my overflowing scrap basket…..

…and turned it into this…..

HURRAY!!!!!

And of course, it didn’t take nearly as long as I had thought!! Isn’t that always the way with things we dread?

I was helped along by using my AccuQuilt Machine….but more about that in a future post!!

At the end of the day, I had lots of 5-inch squares….

…2.5-inch strips…..

… and 2.5-inch squares…..

I used my scrapping decisions from Thursday’s post, and cut STRIPS that were 2-inches….

….and 1.5-inches.

As per my decisions, I did NOT sub-cut these into squares.

THAT cutting can be done when the squares are needed!!

It has given me an incredible feeling of relief to know that this particular task has been accomplished.

Maybe I can keep it up to date going forward…. but I wouldn’t hold my breath!!

Scrappy Decisions Have Been Made!

I am in desperate need of cleaning out my scrap basket…..

…but frankly, I just can’t get into the groove with it!!

Part of my delay is that I’m unsure if I really want to cut the smaller units anymore. And, by smaller, I mean 1.5-inch strips and squares, as well as 2.0-inch strips and squares.

Somehow, those seem to be one step too far!!

As I considered my scrapping journey, I realized that a 2.5-inch scrap was my favorite.

A 1.5-inch square was just TOO small, and I was “on the fence” about 2.0-inch squares.

Then I had an epiphany…. IF I need 2-inch scraps, they can be cut from my 2.5-inch pieces, as can any needed 1.5-inch pieces.

BUT, what about all of those scraps that are too small for a 2.5-inch strip. Am I REALLY going to be willing to toss them?

The answer was NO!!

Instead, I decided to cut STRIPS of 1.5 and 2.0, regardless of their length, but not to sub-cut them into squares.

That way, I am not wasting the fabric, and I can sub-cut them when needed.

OKAY….decision made.

Now to get motivation to actually tackle the job!!
