I’m getting my Hunter’s Star quilt ready to bring downstairs so I can work on it after my knee surgery. That means making the remaining fabric decisions and getting everything cut before then.
But as I started planning the rest of the fabrics, I realized that I needed to back up a step!
Having pieced only part of the blocks, I didn’t have a clear sense of how the complete block would come together.
Before I could decide anything else, I needed to lay out the pieces and see exactly where the remaining fabrics would go….

There is only so much arranging that I can do in my head!
I debated which fabrics to use for the larger squares and finally chose one bright fabric from my scrap stash, along with dark squares that matched the background.
The bright squares were easy to find, pulling pieces from my 5-inch scraps.
When I started cutting the dark squares, I realized I didn’t have enough background fabric to cut all the pieces I needed!
I started looking for alternatives, but the original background was a blue-black that proved very hard to match.
Fortunately, I had another place to look…

I turned to a stack of hand-dyed fabrics my friend Anita made. She LOVED her blue-black dyes!!
I pulled several of her fabrics and cut the dark squares I still needed from them. It felt good to find what this quilt needed in that stack of her hand-dyes.
After a bit of square-cutting, all of the pieces were ready to go….

Once the cutting was finished, I put all the pieces in a box with the instructions.

Now, when it’s time to bring the project downstairs, the fabric decisions and cutting will already be done. I’ll have everything together, ready to piece when I feel like it.
I am not looking forward to the knee replacement, but getting to piece on this will bring a little excitement to the recovery!
