I spent much of this past weekend being asked questions about how I made the “Catherine Wheel of Color” quilt…..

I decided to track the progress and was surprised to see that I started working on it in 2019!!
It started with this article in a magazine….

I had just bought a new color wheel and was excited to play with it using scraps

Before long I had several “snakes” of color….

Then it kept growing until I had this…..

….but my studio looked like this….

I now needed to find a background for the color wheel, and thought that a grey to black gradation would be perfect.
My first thought was to dye one…..

…but I couldn’t get the gradation that I wanted, so I ended up purchasing fabrics instead.
THEN, I had to figure out what to put inside the color square, and after a lot of searching and thinking, I decided on appliqued circles, using Karen Kay Buckley’s templates….

….and in February of 2020, it looked like this…..

We will stop there for now and continue the saga tomorrow!!

Hello Frances, I have been quietly following your blog for several months. I was tickled to see that my Pathways quilt served as the springboard for your prizewinning quilt displayed this year at Quilt Con. Congratulations – your diligent work paid off; your quilt is marvelous!
Hi Abigail. I am so glad to meet you!! Yes, your article was what started it all….and boy did it grow from there. Actually, the quilt was not in Quiltcon, but it did hang in Houston last year. The “best of Show” award was from my local guild show. Thanks for writing such a great article that sparked my imagination!!!
