Backing Ideas

Do you piece together lots of fabrics to make backs for your quilt?

I don’t know about you, but I have always hated buying fabrics to make a backing for a quilt.

Instead, I try to make do with the fabrics that are already on my shelf, as well as using up any leftovers from the front of the quilt.

Previous backs have looked like this….

I find that I normally start with one larger piece of fabric and it grows from there.

BUT, if you don’t want to start from scratch, here are a set of ideas from Victoriana Quilt Designs….

So, get started on those backings!!!

  1. Back in the 80s when I first started quilting, everyone used muslin for the back of the quilt, because it was thought that no one would ever see it, and muslin was cheap. The trend changed in the 90s, and yes, since then I often piece left-over fabrics together to make the backing, because then it doesn’t feel like an added expense. I try to make the backs as pretty as possible. But I do love it when I buy 108″ wide fabric for a special backing for a large quilt–no piecing, quick finish.
