Back in 2010….yes, 15 years ago…. Michael and I had the joy to spend two months in Italy, with one month in Rome. He was working much of that time and I enjoyed days of walking along Italian streets and sightseeing to my heart’s content!
Before we left, I had no idea whether I was going to be sitting in the apartment/hotel a lot or whether I would be able to roam freely, so I took a project with me.
I had recently purchased this book from Judith Baker Montano….

…and was VERY interested in trying out some of her techniques.
So, I put together a small “travel pack” of fabrics, paints and STUFF to work with.
As it happened, I was out and about almost every day, but had a cold for a few days so stayed in the apartment to play.
At the end of the trip, this was the extent of my project…..

I remember that I needed to “heat-seal” the edges of the sheer fabrics….

Since I didn’t have a lighter or a candle, I used rolled up paper towels and set them on fire at the stove.
Maybe not the SAFEST way, but the task was accomplished!!
I loved my jellyfish….

….and the little bit of embroidery that I added…..

The burning question here is WHY I didn’t continue working on it.
As I thought about the timing, I remember that right after we returned, we had new floors installed in our house, and then Michael’s ENTIRE family spent Thanksgiving with us, so I am thinking that I simply didn’t have time to get back to it.
Then, 2 years later, we moved into a new house with a new studio, and this piece got STUFFED into an errant box.
I would like to finish it sometime, but when is the question.
At least it has been unearthed and gone back onto my UFO radar!
Have you ever made anything like this?
I would love to hear about it!

I know you will do something amazing with this.
Judith Baker Montano is an amazing artist and teacher. I have one of her other embroidery books. It’s awesome.
It will be fun to play with again!! I listened to a lecture from Judith at Houston a few years ago. She was so inspiring!!
