What to do with your scraps…

Some time ago, my friend Dale sent an article from “American Patchwork & Quilting”. It talked about scraps and how/if you should keep them. There was a great flowchart to help you decide…..

Which category do you fall in??

“Just Get it Done”!!

One of my favorite YouTube channels is Karen Brown of “Just Get It Done Quilts“.

She has great videos, but the most amazing things are the resources that are contained on her website.

A little perusal provided me with color charts…..

…..a 2-page listing of bed sizes and quilt requirements…..

…..and a 39-page document telling you what size quilt you can make with the blocks that you already have…..

How much time have I spent trying to figure all of this out when all I had to do was look at her documents?!

I encourage you to check her website out!!

Help….my fabrics bled!

Well, it happened again!!

Unless the quilt is an art quilt, I always wash it when finished. I love the feel of the washed fabric and the gorgeous texture that the quilting provides.

But, far too often I have had this happen…..

It has happened so often that I honestly don’t get flustered by it but turn to my trusty system.

Let me tell you about it.

First step is to remove the roll of batting from the bathtub…..

Isn’t that where you store it??

Next, I grab my bottle of “Dawn Clear”

….and mix up a bathtub of soapy, slightly warmish water, and put the quilt in to soak….

Depending on the amount of bleed, I set a timer for approximately 30 minutes (more if the bleed is bigger)…..

….and go do something else and try NOT to worry about it!!

After the time is up, I roll the quilt up to squeeze as much water as possible out…..

…..dump it in a laundry basket….

….and head back to the washer.

I ran it thru the wash cycle again, with NO soap, and also added a number of “Color Catchers”.

And VOILA…..

The bleed is gone……

I highly encourage you to keep a bottle of Dawn Clear on your shelf. It is sometimes hard to find in stores, but you can find it on Amazon.

These are the color catchers that I prefer…..

You can normally find them in local stores but they can also be purchased on Amazon.

I hope that this helps you when the unthinkable happens and something BLEEDS!!

GRIPPY!!

A few months back, I made a comment in a post that I was having trouble with my quilting rulers slipping as I quilted around them.

Several people suggested that I try “Grippy”, a spray coating from Odif…..

Now I know that many people don’t like using sprays but…..OH MY this stuff is magic!!!

I tried it first on a 12-inch ruler that I use for long straight lines. I had already added “ruler grip” tape to the underside and that had definitely helped…

BUT, it would still slip, particularly at the ends of the ruler.

So, a quick spray with Grippy (on a piece of parchment paper)…..

….and it was ready to use!!

I sprayed it a bit heavier on the left end and the ruler became a little clouded (not sure if you can really see it in this picture, but trust me it did)!!

But you can see that the rest of the ruler is completely clear.

The test came when I started quilting long straight lines!!

The ruler stayed in place, from one end…..

….to the other…..

I am not sure how often you have to treat the ruler, but it worked wonderfully for 3+ hours of straight line quilting!!

This spray will DEFINITELY be part of my machine quilting toolbox!!

Stress Free Block Setting

I love to lay out a quilt on my design wall, spending hours and sometimes days determining the EXACT placement of each block.

But that excitement wanes when I realize that I have to now take the blocks OFF of my design wall to sew them together AND keep them in the right order!

Over the years, I have used numbered pins…..

….with some success, but invariably, at least one block gets pieced incorrectly!

As I got ready to piece this quilt……

…..I knew that it was SUPREMELY important that I NOT make any mistakes.

BUT WHAT TO DO!!!

Then I had an epiphany…..

WHAT IF I WRITE THE NUMBERS ON THE BLOCKS WITH A WASH-OUT MARKER???

This quilt will be washed after I finish it so I don’t have to worry about that…..so why not?

I started in the top left corner, marking it 1-1. The next block on that row was 1-2, the next was 1-3. The leftmost block in the second row was 2-1, then 2-2, 2-3, and so forth.

I wrote the number in either the first or second patch on the left-hand side of each block.

Once they were all marked, I was able to stack each row…..

….and head to the machine.

It was SO easy to piece the rows together because I could see at a glance if the blocks were in the right order…..

….or in the WRONG order…..

I did spritz out the numbers as I attached the rows to other rows…..

In no time flat, the top was pieced…..

….AND in the correct order!!

WHY didn’t I think about this before????
