My favorite low-tech tool for practicing free-motion quilting designs.
A small dry-erase board lets you draw a quilting design over and over until the movement begins to feel natural—without using fabric, thread or your sewing machine.
Draw it first. Quilt it second.
WHY I LIKE IT
Before I try a new free-motion quilting design on fabric, I like to draw it first.
Drawing helps me figure out where the design needs to go next, how the different elements connect, and where I might get myself stuck. And because it’s a whiteboard, I can erase it and try again as many times as I need to.
Once my hand understands the movement, it is much easier to transfer that same motion to the sewing machine.
You don’t need a fancy quilting practice system. A small whiteboard and a marker work beautifully.
