Kona Color of Year – 2024

Last week, we talked about the Pantone color of the year for 2024…..

While it is interesting, I am not super excited by it.

So, today I turned to the Kona Color of the Year……

This one seems more exciting to me!!

I need to find a few minutes and pull some fabrics and see what I can do with either of these colors.

HMMMM….I wonder if you could use them BOTH together??

Pantone Color of the Year

Each year I wait (with baited breath) to learn what color has been selected by Pantone as their color of the year.

In 2022, I made a quilt based on the Periwinkle color…..

….and last year I used “Viva Magenta” as the basis for this quilt……

“Crossing Hemispheres”

So, I was excited when I saw that the 2024 color had been named……

However, I am having a hard time coming up with any excitement about using it!!

Right now it seems a rather bland and uninteresting color but that probably just means that I need to play with it some and add other colors that will highlight it.

OKAY….add that to my future quilts to-do list!!!

What would you do with this color?

Pantone Fabric Pull

Last weekend I posted about the Pantone Color of the Year…..

….followed by lots of different palette ideas on the next day…..

NOW it was time to get into the studio and pull some fabrics!!

The fabrics on the top shelves were easy to see…..

But those on the bottom shelves were impossible to get to…..

…..unless I threw myself into it and just sat on the floor…..

This was much better and LOOK at all of those fun fabrics.

I started out by putting the color on my phone and matching fabrics to it. I was amazed to find all of these…..

Next, I started looking at fabrics where Magenta was an accent color…..

AND THEN I FOUND THIS ONE…..

Isn’t that a gorgeous mix of colors!!!

SO…..what if I made THIS my colorway and started looking for fabrics to match!!

How about this one……

Or this……

And don’t get me started about this one…..

Before long my table looked like this…..

…. a GLORIOUS mass of colors!!

But it was time to refine it a bit!! I started by putting down a whiteboard so that the bright purple cutting mat didn’t distort the colors……

….and I started adding fabrics……

It was going to need a background fabric so I added these creams…..

But when I did that, I sort of lost the “accent fabric”!!

So, it was back to the inspiration fabric…..

SO…..this is where I have left it!!

And I know you are asking…..

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE WITH THIS???

The truthful answer is that I have NO idea!!! I have been thinking about playing with “Half-Square Rectangles”, so something may come from that.

But, even if I don’t make anything, it was still fun playing with fabrics!!

What would you make??

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Do those colors go together?

A lot of times I struggle with picking fabrics for a project….always second-guessing myself as to which fabrics “GO” together.

Sometimes I will look for a photo that puts certain colors together….something like this…..

Now, do those boat colors really go together?

Based on a quick trip to my studio, the answer is YES……

Then I saw this fabric on the shelf…..

Look….some fabric designers put those same colors together!!!

If you are interested in the original photo, it was taken in Gaeta, Italy and yes, that is Vesuvius in the background!!

We had a fun day exploring the city…..

So the moral to this story is…..if you are struggling with color selection….find a photo and go from there!!!

It didn’t look that way!!

Have you ever looked at fabric in the store and then had it look completely different at home?

The most likely culprit is the lighting, but it could also be because of the background that the fabric is sitting on.

Here is an example…..

I was pulling fabric for my “Olive Inspiration” block and took a photo to add to the blog. This was the photo……

No No No….that is NOT the color of my fabrics and I would NEVER eat an olive that was this color!!! Actually, I would never eat an olive anyway, but that is another story!!

I took a second photo, this time against a white background…..

YES….THAT is the true color of the fabric!!

So, if the camera sees the colors differently based on what the background is, would the eye not do the exact same thing??

Today’s Terrific Tuesday Tip is…..

AUDITION FABRICS ON A NEUTRAL BACKGROUND!!!

It will make a world of difference!!!
