Let’s get NEGATIVE….space…..

The Negative Space category is one of my favorites because all of that space gives room for….

QUILTING!!!!

So….let’s go walk the aisle!!

The first place ribbon went to a quilt that had an important political message…..

“Uvalde, Texas” by Alexis Pappas

The second place selection was this interesting quilt……

“Array” by Ellen Meeker

The maker wanted to create the idea of curves and movement using only straight lines. She certainly did that with her “sliver” piecing….

The third place quilt invites viewers to contemplate whether they are ENOUGH…..

This next design came from the idea to strip down a design into 2 colors and negative space…..

“Dragonfly” by Juli Smith

I appreciate the mixture of curves and lines!!

The quilting adds so much to this fractal design…..

“Echo” by Patty Dudek

https://onlinefractaltools.com/https://onlinefractaltools.com/I had to find out exactly what a “fractal” was…. a non-regular geometric shape and can be thought of as a never-ending pattern!! If this sounds interesting to you, this quilt was designed using online tools. Check out http://www.onlinefractaltools.com.

I plan to spend some time on this site!!

There is SO much to like about this quilt…..

“Prague 2” by Juli Smith

This quilt was based on the hundreds of copper domes on the buildings in Prague. Her desire was to evoke looking up at the sky and catching the profile of one of those domes as the sun sets behind it!

I love the “hidden” domes in the background

Today I will leave you with……

“Points of View” by Danielle Stanfill

This quilt makes me dizzy and I can’t imagine actually making it. Well done Danielle!!!

Come back tomorrow for more!!

Celebrating the African American Quilt Circle

There was a special exhibit at QuiltCon…..

Let’s enjoy their quilts……

“Pick Up Sticks” by Marjorie Barner

I have always wanted to make an inset strip block….have you tried one??

I love the vibrancy of this next quilt…..

“Squares” by Andrea Carter
.

….and this one as well…..

“Ray of Gold” by Willa Brigham

Her comment about this quilt was that it reminded her of the Gee’s Bend quilts…..stitching from necessity and then for fun!

I love how the bright yellow and orange border increase the peaceful feel of the center….

“Serenity” by Nancy Cash

I love the colors and the Molas in this one….

“Honoring Their Stitches” by Shirley Bullock

Next…..

“Modern Art Museum” by Julendia Galliard

She says that each of the squares represents a unique framed picture in a museum!!

In this quilt, the maker says that she took a pattern past the written instructions and make it hers!!

“Mod & Primary” by Melanie Dantzler

And last…..

“Heavenly Starburst” by Ida Couch

I think we can all agree that these ladies had MAGNIFICENT color sense in their quilts!!

Well, only three categories to go…. Small Quilts, Scrappy Challenge, and Negative Space…..

We will get started on those on Monday!!

Getting Young People Involved

It is gratifying to see young people getting involved in the art of quilting. In the Youth Category, entrants must be 18 years and younger at the time of their entry. However, they can use a quilter who does not meet the age requirement.

The Blue Ribbon quilt was made by a 2nd and 3rd grade class after they had studied the Indigenous Peoples of North America…..

“This Land (Is Not) Our Land by Jack Batten and Classmates

Second place was awarded to…..

“Fever Dreams” by Lucas Weisleder (age 13)

And, third place went to…..

“Crazy Windows” by Victoria Taylor

This is Victoria’s second quilt. Her least favorite part of quilt-making is the binding….many of us feel that way!!

This quilt was awarded a Judge’s Choice ribbon…..

“Self Portrait #2” by Lucas Weisleder (age 13)

I love this next quilt because the maker’s grandmother helped her to make it…..

“Rainbow Splash” by Annie Mazunik

This amazing quilt……

“Elephant Abstractions” by Tucker Nace

He pieced it on his YouTube channel!! If you are interested in seeing more of his work, check out his channel….

He is an amazing young man!!

My favorite of these Youth quilts was this one…..

“Marimba No. 1” by Margaret Jackson

I love the strip piecing and the color selection!!

Come back tomorrow and we will have a look at “Celebrating the African American Quilt Circle”.

Maxing it out at QuiltCon

Yesterday we started looking at the new “Maximalism” Exhibit at QuiltCon.

Remember that the theme for these quilts is MORE IS MORE!!

While most of these quilts were full-on color, this one went the opposite direction…..

“Where Am I Going” by Susan Donovan

I really like the contrast!!

This one is interesting….

“Cool for (Cheshire) Cats” by Catriona Haggart

She calls this a “place where nothing is quite what it seems!!”

There is some great quilting in this one…..

I love the transparency in the center of this one…..

“Keeping It 100” by Cassandra Beaver

Is there a square there???

This quilt has a nice mix of color and black…..

“Any Which Way” by Charles Cameron

He worked on it during small breaks in his workday. Note to self……..it can be done!!

Since many modern quilts use solid fabrics, I found the prints in this one to be refreshing…..

“Treaded – Maxie” by Gail Weiss

I looked up her website, and found that she made this “Maxie” quilt first in response to the exhibit. When finished, she felt that the patterned fabrics were so loud that you couldn’t actually see the design. So, she made a second one in a Minamalist version…..

“Treaded – Minnie” by Gail Weiss (***photo from her website… http://www.gaillizette.com )

Which do you like best??

The maker of this next quilt used selvedges that she has saved for over 10 years!! She says that she created a quilt using “fabric meta-data”…..

“Imposter Syndrome” by Erin Duane

Yes, that is a LOT of data incorporated in those selvedges!!

This one is visually appealing…..

“Mixed Berry Jam” by Tia Curtis

She said that she loves to strip piece AND she loves triangles. That shows in this quilt!!

And the final MAXIMALIST quilt for this year is…..

“Liminal Space” by Carolyn Suttle

Come back tomorrow and we will have a look at some of the Youth quilts!!

More IS more!!

Last week we took a look at the Minimalism Category at QuiltCon. Today we are going the opposite direction and hit the MAXIMALISM exhibit!!

HERE WE GO……

“United Stripes” by Karen Duling

This shows a magnificent use for striped fabric……”strips of stripes cut in opposite angles and pieced to make chevrons”. All I have to say is that you have to be REALLY good at matching points!!

This quilt has lots of improvisational piecing…..

“Finding Joy” by Susanna Vakili

….and was dedicated to her mother who “found joy in each day”!!

“Oh my” was all I could think when I stepped up to this quilt…..

“Feelin’ Groovy” by Linda Hungerford

I love the half-rectangle blocks made with strips. It makes an interesting looking block!

But, I also love the quilting. It is a great mixture of straight lines and FMQ designs. More importantly, it adds greatly to the design…..

The architectural feel of this next quilt appealed to me…..

“Confluence #1” by Michael Ross

I love the “facets” that appear in the quilt!!

Although there aren’t a lot of colors in this quilt…..

“Hidden Tree” by….sorry, I can’t read the name on my photo!

….after I read the title “Hidden Tree”, I feel that I am looking thru the branches and leaves of a tree and seeing that little bit of sky at the top. (If you know who made this, please let me know so that I can give proper credit.)

My mother would probably roll over in her grave if she saw this Double Wedding Ring……

“Crazy One” by Teresa Duryea Wong

….but I kind of like it!!

I would certainly like to take a walk along these “Patchwork Hills”……

“Patchwork Hills” by Christa Rinne

In this case, the maximalism isn’t with fabric but with number of pieces of fabric!! I especially liked these “square blocks”…..

This quilt have a fun visual appeal…..

“Full Wild” by Cindy Grisdela

….but then I like most of Cindy Grisdela’s work!!

I will end today with this quilt…..

“9 Patch” by Nancy Goodman

The simple title of “9-Patch” does not do it justice!

There was so much amazing piecing in this quilt…..

Well, if that doesn’t leave you wanting to see more, I don’t know what will!

BUT DON’T WORRY….tomorrow I will be back with MORE!
