Small Quilts at QuiltCon

Yesterday we looked at the winners in the Small Quilt category from QuiltCon. Let’s see some more today!!

I am very much enamored with quilts that “hide” circles…..

“The Twist” by Patty Dudek

….and this one is so subtle, it is almost invisible! I hadn’t really thought about this process, but she had to make two IDENTICAL quilts and then inset the circle from one quilt into the other quilt. That is a LOT of work!!

The colors in this next quilt are so muted and subtle…..very different for QuiltCon….

“Slab 1” by Bruce Goldstone

I appreciated that the wavy edges of this next quilt…..

“Triangular Waves” by Sarah Muslim Lerebvre

She used foundation paper piecing to achieve this look and WOW….does it pop!!

I applaud this in-depth look at the Venus Fly Trap……

“It’s A Trap” by Melissa De Leon Mason

This quilt is a great example of Improv piecing…..

“Fire and Ice” by Jennifer Sorenson

In an effort to reduce her scraps, she went above and beyond by piecing the background as well….

This next quilt was an exercise in using one simple block, repeated over 500 times…..

“Breaking Apart” by Hannah Daugherty

And guys….these blocks are only 3/4-inch!!

….which means that those quilting lines are less than 1/4-inch apart!!!

This next quilt was in response to the International Quilt Museum challenge, “Modern Meets Modern”….

“Angular” by Stephanie Bracelin

Our final quilt for today is based on the maker’s favorite place on Lake Michigan…..

“Sentry” by Ellen Meeker

I delight in quilts that are made from our memories. They bring a smile to our face every time we pass them in the hall!!

Tomorrow…. more of these outstanding Small Quilts.

How Small Can You Go?

For the next few days, we will have a stroll thru the “Small Quilts” category at QuiltCon.

To be included in this class, quilts must have a total perimeter of 119″ or smaller, but the quilt can be ANY shape.

Let’s get started.

First prize went to this Mind-Boggling quilt……

“White on White” by Amy Pabst

It has an astounding 12,720 pieces of fabric!! I have seen a lot of her work in other shows and I cannot IMAGINE how she does this. Each of these blocks in 1-inch!!

Second place went to this visual feast…..

“Outer Orbit” by Stephanie Ruyle.

These curves are all INSET….not applique….and the quilting echoes the design perfectly…..

The Third Place ribbon went to…..

“Walter” by Sarah Hibbert

It is named for the designer, Walter Gropius, who famously said “The mind is like an ubrella – it functions best when open”.

I like this next quilt as much for the name as for the design……

“Flaming Hot Cheetos” by Trisha Beute

As she was designing this quilt, her teenage son was discussing the flammability of Cheetos and their use as fire starters. The pattern developed from there!!

This next one was made from an original fabric painting…..

“Ocean View: Window Wide Open” by Cindy Pryor

I love the stylized alphabet that appears in this next quilt…..

“36 Days of Quilt Type” by Kaitlin Rim

This was based on a project that encourages artists to explore their unique interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet.

Next is a great improv-pieced quilt…..

“Manhattan Solstice” by Carl Brown

Lastly for today, is a perplexing example of dimension…..’

“Infinite Possibilities” by Terry Wilder

Come back tomorrow for more of these mesmerizing quilts!!

The last of the negativity!!

Today let’s finish up the Negative Space category from Quiltcon 24!

Let’s get started with a favorite…..

“Hangover” BY Claire Victor

This quilt is part of a series where inspiration comes from the tumbling block pattern and the maker’s love of origami. Her goal is for it to have dimension but in a very graphic way, with no shading or painting!
And, as you probably already figured out, I love the quilting…

….and that is a LOT of pebbles!! Well Done Claire!

This is a fun use of black and white fabrics….

“Focus” by Michael Pecenka

There is just a SMALL amount of black in this quilt but it accentuates the pattern nicely…..

“8 of Diamonds” by Kaitlin Rim

About a year ago I purchased a template for making ovals and this quilt makes me want to pull it out and get started!

I can’t imagine piecing this next quilt…..

“Moment of Clarity” by Tara Evans

It brings a whole new dimension to the “Lone Star” design!!

There are more ovals in this quilt…..

“The Night Garden” by Claudia Shearer

That chartreuse green just MAKES this one!!

Finally, I LOVE The shapes and colors in this one…..

“Summer Cherries” by Annie Hudnut

Using the light colored thread in the quilting was the perfect addition to add more “colors” without adding more fabric…..

WEll, that is it for “Negative Space”. On Monday we will head to the “Small Quilts”.

They are amazing….you won’t want to miss them.

Continuing on our “Negative” journey

Day three of our “Negative Space” Category starts with an amazing quilt….

“Solar Eclipse” by Michelle Trimble

There is just SO much to like here, from the piecing…..

….to the quilting…..

Black and white featured in this quilt…..

“Black, White, Whatever” by Leasa Eisele

Can you see the star in this next quilt?…

“The Disappearing” by Hillary Goodwin

The quilt is made with “botanical dyed” fabrics. I would love to know more about that!!

The black in this next quilt really accentuates the wonderful colors….

“Summer Journey #3” by Lenny VanEijk

The last quilt from yesterday is by the same maker and the series explores the interplay and tension between foreground and background, colors and values, and the contrast between them.

These circles remind me of Bubbles….

“Simple Luxury 2” by Susan Braverman

…which makes sense, since that was the inspiration!! Look at the great bubbles incorporated in the quilting..

“New Moon Rising” is a reflection of growth and new beginnings…..

“New Moon Rising” by Hannah Haberkern

AND….look at the GRID quilting…..

Fabulous!!!

Finally for today…..

“Moving Forward” by Bill Stearman

The artist statement is worth reading….

I’ve had a couple of challenging years lately. I’ve survived them and grown as a person. I’ve moved forward. Covid. A terminal diagnosis of Liver Cancer. Glimmers of some hope. A generous gift of love; my daughter’s liver for a transplant. Lifesaving surgery. Growing hope. Reclaiming love. Reshaping my life. Always with gratitude. Always with a belief in the future. Knowing I was moving forward. Rarely in a straight line.

Tomorrow we will take a quick break for Free-Motion Friday, but come back on Saturday and we will finish up this wonderful category!!

More Negative Space

Before we look at more of the Negative Space category from QuiltCon24, let’s look at the definition…..

This first quilt exemplifies that negative space and also some amazing quilting…..

“Obscure” by Heather Akerberg

Let’s look closer at the quilting….

The use of shape in this next quilt is wonderful….

“Ordinary World II” by Sarah Muslim Lefebvre

This quilt was made in response to the “Pantone Challenge”. Now I didn’t know that there WAS a Pantone Challenge but I sure want to know more about it!!

This quilt is MOSTLY negative space….

“Head Adjustment” by Tanie Tanti

This quilting provides great texture…..

The goal of this next quilt was to create one that looked like embroidery stitches….in particular Sashiko embroidery….

This next quilt is a take-off on a traditional American red and white quilt….

“Left Turn” by Barbara Danzi

I really like the “stripes in the curves…..

“Cosmic Blossom: by Jeanne Eileen Garcia

And this next one has even more of them……

“Summer Journey #1” by Lenny VanEijk

I REALLY need to play with them at some point!!

Come back tomorrow for LOTS MORE…..
