The LAST of QuiltCon

Well, after 42 posts, I can officially say that I have shown you ALL of my favorites from QuiltCon-2024!!

Today, we will take our last stroll thru the “Super Scrappy” Category.

I love the plaid and checkerboard design in this quilt….

“de Colores” by Charles Cameron

I loved the artist’s statement…..

I don’t know what I like best about this next quilt….the 60-degree diamonds or the plethora of fabrics…..

“The Meeting Place” by Andrea Barrett

And the quilting adds so much as well!!

This quilt looks simple, but the use of fabrics makes it anything but simple..

“A Study of Rothko in Fabric” by Cathy Martin

Have a closer look…..

This quilt is the “minimalist” version of the “maximalist” quilt that I posted about previously….

“Treaded – Minnie” by Gail Weiss

You can check it out HERE…..

I have been looking for a fun strip pattern and ran across the “vortex” quilts like this one……

“Sunburst” by Holly Gatto

I have a slew of hand-dyes that this would be perfect for!!

Look at the wonderful piecing…..

This next quilt is a great example of improv piecing….

“In Excess” by Patti Coppock

The next quilt has a LOT of HST’s…..

…. ONE-INCH HST’s!!!

…..TEN THOUSAND HST’s!!!

Oh my!!

And last, but definitely not least…..

“Next Verse. Different Than the First” by Cassandra Beaver

It contains wonderful touches of hand quilting and just a touch of ties.

SO….we are officially finished with QuiltCon .

Thank you for joining me on this long journey!! Several people have “thanked” me for sharing the quilts and my thoughts on them. Honestly, writing these posts has given me a chance to re-live the show at a more leisurely pace!!

Now I have to figure out a way to get to Arizona next year!!

Scrappy Quilts from QuiltCon

Yesterday we started looking at the Scrap Quilts category from QuiltCon24.

Although I should have known better, I was surprised that there were so many solid scraps. I guess that I am too old to not think of scraps as being lots of prints!! Regardless, there were some marvelous quilts.

The quilting in this first quilt (add there is a LOT of it) adds SO much to the design….

“Chutes & Ladders” by Steph Skardal

She pieced the blocks first and then added bias strips over the top. You can see it better in this photo….

Regardless of the piecing, the diamond shape quilting is a sensational addition!!

The next quilt appealed to me greatly…..

“Nightlife” by Laurice Earl

She started making the window/building blocks freestyle in all different sizes and colors….just because….they’re really fun to make!!. Then she realized that she had made an entire city’s worth…..and the quilt was born!

This quilt is a unique way to use charm squares….

“Trying To Contain Chaos” by Carol Stanley

The quilting accentuates the curves nicely…..

The intricate piecing in this next quilt makes me gasp….

“Stuffed Crumbs” by Karen Duling

Karen commented that working with all of the colors made for soothing sewing in a Michigan winter.

Soothing….really???

You can’t help but smile when you see this next quilt….

“Polka Dots and Moonbeams” by Linda Hungerford

The colors, quilting and overall look of this quilt makes me happy!!

This quilts should have won a “best use of color” ribbon …..

“Scrap Maze” by Anthony Bowman

Anthony says that “this maze serves as a ‘scrap portfolio’ of eight years of quilting”.

I often feel that way about my scrap quilts too, although many times I can’t remember what the scrap came from!!

The maker has proclaimed this next quilt to be a Map of Joy…..

“Joy Map” by Octavia Pitts

She was going for a look of sea glass and I think she accomplished that well.

Finally for today…..

“Rosettes” by Jessica Plunkett

Jessica is the one who makes the ribbons for QuiltCon and these fabrics were used in the 2024 ribbons. What a fun souvenir!!

Come back tomorrow and we will finish up the Scrappy Quilt category!!

Super Scrappy Challenge from QuiltCon

The words QuiltCon and Scrappy don’t really seem to go together, but this year’s category showed that they CAN indeed.

The rules stated that the quilt TOP must use at least 30 different fabrics.

The first place quilt was amazing and definitely met the requirements….

“Illusion” by Beth Shutty

I absolutely LOVE this design and the way that she used different grids to achieve the movement in the quilt. The strip piecing is so simple but this design makes it shine. Well done!!

The addition of back and white fabrics are the crowning touch…..

Equally exciting, the second place ribbon was awarded to…..

“Multifarious me” by Tara Glastonbury

Tara says that “this may be the most ‘me’ quilt I’ve ever made!!”

I particularly like that she used one of the side circles to be the basis for her quilting. The off-centered touch adds nicely to the quilt.

Third place went to…..

“Irregular Chain” by Daisy Aschenhoug

I can’t imagine making the curved strip sets, but they certainly worked well!!

This also won one of the Judge’s Choice awards.

Continuing on in the category….

“Neptune in Aquarius” bu Maureen Garner

The simple quilting design does a perfect job of highlighting the amazing quilting.

These purple and orange colors really popped……

“Multitudes” by Heather Akerberg

This would be a fun block to play with…..

The vibrant colors in this next quilt are marvelous…..

“Evolution” by Emmely Treffers

She has chosen to represent biodiversity in our world….how a single species can give rise to a very diverse population.

This next quilt takes the simple Half-Square-Triangle and splits it many times….

“Split” by Samantha Saturday

Finally for today……

“Morcheeba Amoeba aka Party in the Petri Dish” by Sarah Spencer

As you might guess, I particularly appreciated the FMQ…..

SUCH FUN!!!

Come back tomorrow and we will look at the 2nd set of these fun scrappy quilts.

QuiltCon Small Quilts – Finale

We have a few more “Small Quilts” to view, so let’s get going!

This first quilter always amazes me with her work…..

“Aura No. 7” by Audrey Esarey

The rings are pieced and then layers of quilting thread are added to slightly shift the hue of the fabric.

She was working for a “bright, warm glow”…..she certainly achieved it!!

And another quilt in the “insanity” category…..

“Cotton Candy” by Amy Pabst

Amy pieces on a 1947 Singer Featherweight. There are 13,795 pieces in this quilt.

Now back to my original comment….Don’t you think that there should be an “INSANITY” Category in every quilt show????

This next quilt was inspired by an airport carpet…..

“Lines of Travel” by Teresa Arendell

It was part of a Kona Color Challenge.

I appreciate the simplicity of the design!

The construction of this next quilt is interesting…..

“Innards” by Steph Skardal

It was made from pre-quilted pieces that were laser cut and assembled back together with glue and another round of quilting. The dots were then layered on top!

What a fun idea!

And our final quilt of the “Small Quilt” category…..

“Stardust” by Betsy Balog

The piecing in this quilt might be considered bland, but the embroidery elevates it to a whole new level……

I love how she quilted channels and then laid down embroidered lines in the channel. SO innovative!!

Okay guys…..we are through with the Small Quilts, and sadly, there is only one category left. Come back on Monday for the “Scrappy” Category!!

More Small Quilts

Today we start day THREE of our tour of the Small Quilt Category at QuiltCon!

Let’s go….

I am amazed with how many people made quilts to remember Covid…..

“Covid RNA” by Elia Pestana

Personally, I want to forget it!! Regardless, this quilt is a great example of good things that came from the lockdown. The maker took an indigo dyeing workshop that was the basis for the fabric. The rest was done with embroidery and machine Sashiko!

I had to do some research to understand this next quilt…..

“Enter The Medina” by Tina Davis

I read the title and wondered “what is a medina”. Answer……

A medina is the old part of a town or city, found in many countries of North Africa, not just Morocco. It is typically walled, and contains narrow streets, fountains, palaces and mosques. Many medinas are car-free as there is not enough space in the alleyways for cars to pass.

So, I got to view a great Improv quilt AND learn something new!!

These next two quilts employ a technique that uses thread ONLY!! As a matter of fact, that is the name of this first one…..

“Nothing But Thread” by Deborah Kircheim

Take a closer look…..

This next quilt employs the same technique, but results in a completely different feel….

“Red Stitches, No Ditches” by Jessica Rundlett

You don’t realize that she also quilted the white areas until you look closer….

She initially quilted the grid and then added hand embroidered accents over a period of six months.

And she gets full marks for creativity for the name “Red Stitches, No Ditches”!!

This next fun quilt was created for her guild’s Kona Color challenge…..

“Banana Crush” by Margaret Fleisher

I love the repeated blocks and the bright colors!

Instead of the controlled color in the previous quilt, this next quilt has a riot of color…

“Color Fest” by Stephanie Ruyle

Her challenge for this quilt was to use the scraps in the shape that they were already in….so NO cutting down or reshaping. YIKES!!!

I love the line of cross-stitches that she added……

I wonder what made her think of that?

This next quilt explores the Pantone 2023 color of the year, “Viva Magenta”…..

“Tipsy” by Cassandra Beaver

The vibrancy of this quilt appeals to my senses!!

I will leave you with this visual feast and return tomorrow to finish our tour of the Small Quilts from QuiltCon.
