As you are about to find out, I LOVE art museums!!!
But it is easy to get overwhelmed after looking at hundreds of art pieces and then it all becomes one big blurred image!!
I have mentioned before that I enjoy a podcast called “More Happier” by Gretchen Reuben and her sister, Elizabeth Craft.
Back in March, I heard one of their podcasts where they were talking about how to look at art. I talked a bit about it in this post, but couldn’t find the entire synopsis of the discussion.
I was so excited when I found the FULL LIST and I want to share it with you here.
Look at the “negative space” (we quilters know what this is) in a painting
In each room, choose your favorite artwork
My favorite idea, and one that I used while visiting art galleries this past week, was to look for the Pantone Color of the year…..
I spent much of my time while touring the Ny Carlsburg Glypotek gallery with my iPhone out, comparing the colors……
I found that my eye was drawn to paintings with this color or something close and it did add a layer of interest to my visit!!

Yesterday I walked you up to the Danish National Museum but didn’t let you inside. Today we venture in!!!
Now I am not much of a history buff. It was my LEAST favorite class at school. So when I enter museums, I am NOT looking at the history side of things but rather at the design, color, and shapes of things. And there are always items that are particularly interesting to me and I hope are interesting to you as well!!
First up were these two “Virtual Reality” shows from the 1600’s!! Here is the information that was provided….
The box itself is not at all interesting…..
When you look in the box from the top, you see a three-sided painting that doesn’t make a lot of sense
But when you put your eye up to the peephole, this is what you see……
And in the other box, you see this…..
By the way, both of these photos were taken with my phone looking thru the peephole.
BUT….what caught my eye was the design around each peephole…..
After I bent down to look in the hole, I realized that the two bottom circles were from the cheeks of the lookers…..depending on which eye you used to peep. The marks above the hole were eyebrows and foreheads!!
The other optical illusion that I saw was very interesting……
This is the view from the top of the box…..
….a mass of colors swirled together!!
But when you look at the cylinder, you can see the painting…..
Who in their right mind figured this out!!!
In the “Other Nations” area of the museum, this picture caught my eye……
It looked like an abstration of a seed head or flower.
Then I read about it…..
I can’t imagine exactly how all of those knots helped them to remember but I sure do like it as a piece of art!!!
It would make a fun Whole-Cloth design!!
In the Africa section, I saw this model wearing a black and white woven garment…..
Look at a detail of the squares…..
Don’t you love how some of them are split into stripes or different colors are added in. It is VERY simple but so effective!!
In the American section, there was a lot of art from the Navajo Nation and this weaving reminded me of a quilt that you might see at QuiltCon…..
Finally, my favorite inspiration from the museum was this cloth from one of the Polynesian nations…..
I am not much for improvisational piecing but I might enjoy it if I limited the number of fabrics and split them into blocks like this. Another item for the To-Do list!!

When I got off the train in Copenhagen, my first destination was the Danish National Museum.
Of course, I got a little sidetracked along the way…
I had always heard of Tivoli Gardens and was expecting a beautiful garden in the middle of the city……
I was surprised to learn that it is an amusement park!! I could see some of the rides over the wall and hear the screams when the bottom dropped out of various platforms high in the air.
I could see people through the cracks in the fence and it looked like a fun place for families to spend the day together!!
My next stop was the Copenhagen City Hall. There was a line to go in but fortunately, I was just using it as a landmark and hadn’t planned to enter. I was intrigued by the statues that surround and protect the building…..
Any ideas of what they are???
I loved this statue of Hans Christian Anderson…..
I am always intrigued by statues that are looking up at something and I ALWAYS have to look to see what they are seeing!!! In this case, it was Tivoli Gardens!!
On the way, I also did a quick walk through the City Hall garden area. There were two pieces here that caught my eye. the first was this big lizard making his way down the stairs…..
Who knows why there is a lizard but it sure makes life interesting!!
The second was this fountain…..
At first glance, I couldn’t tell what the figure in the fountain was. As I got closer I discovered that it was a bear trying to catch the water in his mouth…..
SOOO cute!!
I am also a sucker for red doors and these two elevated doors caught my attention…..
Finally, the flowers outside of buildings have been amazing. Many of the buildings, both commercial and residential, have flower beds sporting a riot of color…..
Speaking of flowers, I took this photo in Malmo on our arrival day ……
It is one of the best-composed photos I have ever taken, or maybe the garden was the best-composed one I have ever seen!!!

Some time back, one of my best friends shared this poem with me…..
Today, we are flying to Copenhagen and then traveling to Malmo, Sweden.
I will be spending some time in the field with Michael but also plan to spend some time letting my feet play their song on the streets of Copenhagen!!
Keep coming back because I am SURE to find lots of inspiration along the way!!

On Friday morning we left camp at 6:00 am with the idea of searching for Bush Pigs. They are fairly elusive but we were determined!!
I couldn’t complain too much about the early start, especially with this type of view…..
…or this one as the sun came up….
Our guide for this part of the trip is Bredger, an American who works here for part of the year and in the US as a policeman the rest of the year. This particular fact is VERY important as the story progresses!!
Bredger’s truck is not a double cab so typically he and Michael share the cab and I sit on the back and enjoy the views!! It is amazing what great photos you can get as you slowly drive thru various areas….
I have to say here that I LOVE my iPhone!! These photos are almost impossible with a DSLR but I could just point and shoot with my phone!!
As the sun rose, I found myself enamored with the shape of the Palmetto leaves and I took LOTS of photos. I will do a separate post about that!!
Our tracker was Vashko and he did a marvelous job of protecting me from branches and vines that would have hit my head as we traveled……
He also steadied me when we hit particularly BIG bumps and I flew all over the back of the truck!!
I started out sitting completely on my butt with both feet on the floor but quickly learned that it was easier if I propped one or two feet up on the roll bar and pushed back into the seat….
But, in some cases, even that wasn’t enough!!
In 2021 I wrote a post about truck sitting including all of the good AND bad parts….
This area has large “dips” in the land that are called Pans. They normally have water somewhere in the center and can have large open spaces as well as tree and brush areas.
These areas are normally overflowing with animals, but as we drove, we saw VERY few. Bredger actually commented that something was wrong.
As we drove, we would often come to dead-ends and it was Vashko’s job to make a way…..
It was amazing to see how quickly he could carve out an area just using his machete.
THEN IT HAPPENED…..
Vashko and Bredger spotted 6 poachers running away from the truck, one carrying a long spear (used to kill the snared animals…..not us)!!
Bredger immediately kicked into full police pursuit mode and we flew over the ground. After 10 seconds, he realized that if he hit a bump at this speed, I would be thrown out of the truck so he slowed to a respectable pace.
When we arrived there was neither hide nor hair of the poachers. We scouted out a bit to see if we could find their camp but finally decided to leave it to the professionals.
When Vashko isn’t working with Bredger, he is part of the Anti-Poaching team of Coutada 11. Bredger radioed into the Anti-Poaching headquarters and Vashko gave them all of the lowdown.
He also took several large palmetto leaves and put them in the road as a marker.
A bit later we ran into one of the anti-poaching patrols……
….and they were given all of the data as well.
We never did see many animals, but these three Hardebeasts were gamboling about…..
….and the Lillies were a beautiful distraction…..
So that is the excitement of ONE morning in the bush….more to come!!
