Why didn’t you tell me??

Last Thursday I talked about starting a new scrap quilt using scrap 2-inch squares and strips.

I also mentioned that the finished blocks would be 10 inches.

I have now finished cutting over 3/4’s of the strips…

and, as I cut, something kept bothering me….

I was cutting the strips in 4.5-inch, 6.5-inch, and 8.5-inch sections. I looked at my pattern several times and convinced myself that these were correct. I mean, I had not only done the math, but I had written all of the measurements out NEATLY on a sheet of paper…… as opposed to the scraps of paper that I normally use.

THEN…. the problem finally worked it’s way thru my thick brain….

If I am using 2″ scraps, they will finish at 1.5-inches, meaning that the block will finish at 7.5-inches and my strips should be cut at 6.5-inches, 5-inches and 3.5-inches!!

VERY BIG SIGH!!!

What do I do now? The best idea would probably be to re-cut all of the strips

But what would happen if I kept them the size they are now, matched the white squares when piecing, and then trimmed down the final blocks?

After a lot of thinking, THAT is my plan.

I have NO desire to re-cut all of these pieces!!

BUT really…..one of you should have spotted it!! HA

  1. ugh! i am so sorry. This is all of us so often. We get in a mode of cutting and convinced of our calculations. Why didn’t anyone tell you? We aren’t quilt police, hopefully, but every now and then it would have been helpful! This reminds me of a college class i was in with a lecturing professor who had his fly open. Awkward, to say the least! Who among us would say anything even if we noticed? Women especially1? Suddenly, one guy walking in late said something… and the prof turned around, zipped up, back around to us he proceeded to yell at the rest of us for keeping silent! Sometimes honesty is hard. In your case, I wish we had paid more attention. I will admit that i’m not good at my own math, let alone yours!

  2. If you had used 2.5 inch squares, would the math work with a ten inch square. I like the finished 10 inch square more than 7.5.

  3. Not too much recutting in this case! The 6.5 is cut, and the 8.5 becomes 5 and 3.5!!
Dunno what you’ll do with the 4.5 x 2, save them for another quilt 🙂

    1. That is true Jenny, and I honestly thought about doing that. BUT, I am not sure that I can be bothered to recut ANYTHING. I may just make the block and then trim down.

  4. I was thinking the same as Jenny — just cut your 8.5 inch strips into 5 and 3.5.
A little cutting now saves a lot of trimming later. 🙂 It will be a cute block; I look forward to seeing it!

  5. Even there. Done that! I am sure I will do it again at some point. The revised quilt will be just as lovely.
