Personal Retreat – NEXT…..

After taking a break for lunch on Saturday, I was ready to make the final block for February in my Block-Of-The-Month challenge.

I felt that the paper-pieced heart might be a good finish for the month.

I started by tracing the pattern onto Golden Threads Paper….

This paper is designed to mark patterns for machine quilting, and the great thing is that it tears cleanly… always important for paper piecing!

The instructions provided fabric sizes that gave ample room for piecing and I selected the first six fabrics that I wanted to use…..

I quickly pieced one side of the heart.

Let me show you the process that I use for paper piecing…..

First, determine the NEXT line that is to be pieced…..

Place a piece of plastic on the line to be sewn….

Fold the PAPER over the plastic….

You may need to pull the paper from some of the previously stitched lines.

Place an “Add-A-Quarter” ruler…..

….on top of the piece so that the 1/4-inch edge is butted up against the plastic….

Use your rotary cutter to cut along the edge of the ruler, leaving a neat 1/4-inch seam allowance…

Now turn the piece over again and line up the next fabric with the edge you just cut…..

Turn it over again and sew along the drawn line….

It is amazingly fast to sew using these steps and the block was quickly pieced….

I trimmed it down to the correct size and removed the papers….

The only problem that I had with the instructions was that the pieces were greatly oversized and I ended up with a lot of waste….

SO…. at the end of my BOM Retreat time, I had 6 blocks ready to go…..

….and more time left on my weekend retreat!!

HURRAY!!

Personal Retreat – Session 3

Next up on my personal retreat was to make yet another Block-Of-The-Month challenge.

When I looked further at the options for February, I realized that I didn’t want to make any of the “cutsie” designs….

…but would stick to the pieced blocks instead. IF I end up wanting or needing these blocks, I can always go back and add them at a later date.

SO….. I chose this very simple design….

I looked at the colors I had already used and then headed to the gold/browns.

The first step was to sew the two triangles together….

….press them, and then add the darker triangle…..

After my troubles on the last block, I decided to cut the brown triangles oversize and then cut them down…

It was a GOOD decision!!

The last step was to add a “flip-and-sew” triangle to one side of the square and sew the block together….

It will be interesting to see how this light blue-green works in the quilt…..finger’s crossed!!

Personal retreat – session 2

On Saturday morning, I was in my studio early….

…and ready to start working on the next block for my 2026 Guild Challenge. This time I selected this block….

…planning to make it primarily in shades of green.

I selected the initial fabrics….

…but was a bit concerned about how they would work with the background fabric on the left. I decided to add an accent piece cut from my “hero” fabric for the quilt, feeling that it would separate the greens from the background….

I don’t have tons of this fabric and am not sure exactly how I will use it in the end product, so was concerned about cutting into it.

AND, of course, I cut the first pieces WRONG!!!

They weren’t supposed to all be the same size, but two of them were an inch longer.

When I laid it out, I still wasn’t completely sold on the colors, but plunged on with the piecing…..

Because of the patches’ small size, I had to be very careful with my seam allowances and pressing. It helped to make liberal use of my wooden Clapper.

I was thrilled with how perfect the center pinwheel turned out…..

As I added the skinny borders to the outside, it became necessary for me to add a step to my usual pressing routine

I would first iron the piece, then use my fingers to add more “pressing” out…

…and then finished it off with the iron again.

After I added the two borders, it was time to add the triangles to the corners. I cut the squares the correct size and tried twice to sew them in place properly, but it was NOT going to work!!

I finally resorted to cutting the squares larger than needed, and marking the sewing line….

I trimmed the entire block to the correct size…

…finally, cutting out the excess from the triangles…

Block FINISHED….

Retreat time – Let’s go!!

After I had finished my Retreat Relaxation time, I headed upstairs to my studio and started working on my first block from our guild’s block of the month challenge.

I decided that I wanted to make one more from the January section, so pulled out the instructions for this block…

I spent a bit of time selecting the fabrics and finally came up with an idea that I thought would work.

The first step was to make a series of half-square triangles. After I had sewn them, I was ready to cut them apart and press them. At this point, I remembered the instructions that I had once heard about making accurate half-square triangles.

The suggestion was to press the triangles BEFORE you cut them apart. This is a little hard when you are making them two at a time, but it helps tremendously.

I started by ironing one side….

…then turned them around and carefully ironed the other side….

Look at the cute “birds” that I came up with….

Now, I cut the triangles apart and ironed them flat….

Next step was to use the “Bloc-Loc” ruler and the Cutterpillar Rotary mat to trim the squares to 1.5-inches….

If you have never seen this technique, I did a video a while back….

It took a few tries to get the block laid out properly…..

…but the piecing went quickly and soon the block was finished….

So ended my first retreat session. I went to bed fulfilled and thankful that I didn’t have a 6-hour drive to Raleigh the next morning!!

Stay tuned….more to come!!

Year Long Challenge.. Month 1

Last week, I told you about our new guild “Block of the Month” challenge.

The week before our first meeting, I realized I needed to decide which of the 8 January blocks I would make.

It was too hard to decide while flipping through the book, so I took photos of each possible block and printed them on a single page…

I quickly decided on these three…..

…and spent the night before the workshop making the first two blocks…..

One of my concerns is having SO many bright colors in the quilt, so I decided to make each block in a monochromatic theme.

Remember that the light green on the left block is my “background” fabric.

I also started prepping and appliqueing the third block….

AND….since it is already February 1st and I haven’t finished the flower basket block OR the 4th (yet un-selected) block……

I am ALREADY behind!!

Oh well, I will move on to February and worry about it later. After all, “tomorrow is another day”!!
