The “Award-Winning Texas Quilts” was an exhibit sponsored by Accuquilt. It was a showcase of works by current members of Texas quilt guilds. Any quilt that won an award was eligible.

There were many more quilts in this exhibit but here are my favorites…..

This has overtones of what I learned in a Ricky Tims lecture. I love the curves and (you guessed it) the quilting!!

This next quilt is an imaginative way to use up orphan blocks……

I am sorry that I don’t have the maker’s name for this one. IF you know the quilt, please provide the information so that I can add it to this post!!

This next quilt was one of my favorites in the entire show…..

Ellen and her 7 friends produced a marvleous quilt top and Ellen did a wonderful job with the quilting…..

This quilt is a simple pattern but it appealed to me…..

Finally, I recently saw a You-Tube video about making a kaleidscope quilt using panels and this is a prime example of that technique…..

Several special exhibits were eye-catching and the “Athletes” was one of them.

Before we look at the individual quilts, let’s hear Ann Houle talk about them…..

Each of these quilts has so much movement and they were a joy to view.

Several had the same landscape format which was very effective……

This one reminded me of a foggy day in the Northwest……

You can FEEL his pain as he climbs the hills!!

This quilt was inspired by photos from the parents of this young climber…..

Ann notes that she spent a lot of time getting the tools of the trade correct!!

I found this quilt interesting…..

….because she changed her quilting and included some non-linear quilting….

It was very effective to have the sky quilted this way!!

The background on this one looks like the running lanes….

And, the motion depicted in this next one is perfect…..

Finally, this was probably my favorite of all of them…..

I found this entire exhibit to be outstanding and I am truly impressed with Ann’s work and so appreciate her speaking with me!!

When Linda and I entered the International Quilt Festival, we headed immediately to the BIG winners and they did not disappoint!!

This was the “Machine Artistry” Award…….

Janet is known for her perfectionism and also for having an alphabet in her quilt. This one was perfect!!

The “Contemporary Artistry” award was given to this quilt…..

This was her artist statement—-

On a summer morning, when I looked up on the walkway where I usually walk, I saw a slight blue sky among the many leaves. The sight was very pleasant to me and I love this place. I made this quilt with that feeling in mind.

She DEFINITELY achieved that feeling.

I love the quilting that she used to help the background recede.

The Thread Artistry award was given to…..

She added embroidery to the “Baltimore Album” style blocks …..

The “Innovative Artistry” award went to……

There were several fun things with this quilt, including the clothing that was made from fabrics that were folded to achieve the movement…..

This next quilt won the “Contemporary Artistry” award…..

There is NOT a black background behind this quilt…… it is all “open work” and lace work…..

I am going to have to do some research about this technique as it was AWESOME!!

On day two, the maker, Kathy Wylie was standing with her quilt, patiently answering all of our questions. Here is her description of the process…..

And now for the “Best of Show”….. you have probably been seeing this quilt all over Facebook…..

This quilt is amazing and there are so many little things to see!! It is based on 1/4-inch squares……

….and the hair contains all sorts of interesting secrets…..

It was truly worth of the BEST OF SHOW and it was such fun to see it up close.

Sadly, most of the makers of these award-winning quilts were not at the show so we haven’t been able to ask our usual questions….like “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING”!!!!

Seeing these six quilts bodes well for the rest of the show!!!

For the next several weeks I will be showing my favorite quilts from the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. I had an amazing 3-1/2 days on the floor, loving the quilts, meeting up with quilters (both old and new) and being SO… SO…. SO….. inspired.
