Stepwells as quilt inspiration

Have you ever heard of a “Stepwell”? They are found primarily in India and serve three purposes….

Water storage: Stepwells were built to collect and store rainwater during monsoons for use during the dry season.
Water access: They provide a way to access the water table, which could be very deep underground in arid regions.
Community hub: Their elaborate design made them important social and ceremonial centers, sometimes housing as many as 100 steps to reach the bottom.

This is what they look like….

Isn’t that cool to look at?

And look at it from this angle..

And look at the angles on this one in a photo taken by Pam Holland….

Wouldn’t it be fun to use this idea in a quilt design?

How would you do it??

Fence inspiration from Dunoon

On Saturday, I told you about our walk around the town of Dunoon, Scotland.

I saw these fences and immediately started planning flower quilts in my head….

These designs would make fun appliques OR great machine quilting patterns!

What would you make?

More Bathroom Inspiration

A few weeks back, I posted about inspiration from a bathroom, and my friend, Mary, sent me this wonderful blue and yellow example…..

At least, when I FIRST looked at it, I only saw blue and yellow, but now I can see another pinkish color that adds a lot of interest….

I started out trying to figure out a repeating block design…..

….but couldn’t come up with one that would repeat easily.

Then, I started looking at piecing it in horizontal rows…..

This would work but you would have to keep your wits about you to keep the pattern going.

Finally, I looked at vertical columns…..

… and I think that this would be easiest way to piece it.

You would alternate 4-patches with larger squares on one column, and then piece the narrow column using the dark fabric and the “funky peach”.

Okay, now I have figured out HOW to piece it…….

Mary…..back to you!!
