A Little Mixed Media

February is convention time for my husband, Michael’s, side-hustle. Two weeks ago we spent 5 days in Atlanta and the World Congress Convention Center.

While enjoying the banquet reception, I began perusing the art on the walls….

I LOVE this piece by Lillian Blades……

“Magnolia 2023”

It is described as “Mixed media wired assemblage,” and it is marvelous.

When I look at it from a distance, it reminds me of a “Duckworth” scrap quilt….

Have a closer look at the artwork….

Isn’t it wonderful!!

Flower Inheritance….

Each week, I am sharing a UFO from my studio. Some are from me, and some I have inherited from others.

This one was inherited from a quilter friend…. a long time ago!!

Pat K. was one of the kindest quilters I have ever known. She was always trying new ideas and techniques, even as her health failed.

Pat was highly involved in our guild’s charity work, and her children donated a bunch of her UFOs to the group to raise money for future work.

I purchased this one….

My original idea was to quilt it to death and call it finished.

At the time, I had just become interested in beading so thought that I would add a bunch of beads.

I did some work on it….

….but the beads don’t show up well and, honestly, don’t add anything to the project.

I think it may be time to remove the few beads I added and go back to my original idea to quilt it well!

Removing the beads will be an easy “watching TV in the evening” exercise, and quilting it will be fun as I remember Pat and her life!

Maybe….just maybe I can get this one finished this year!!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

One of my favorite things about quilting is motivating others and helping them in their quilting journey. As part of this endeavor, I LOVE to present programs and workshops to groups and guilds around the world. All of my programs work well with Zoom meetings, and I would love to speak to your group.

Pressing sheet or Parchment Paper?

I do quite a bit of work using Wonder Under or some type of fusible.

Previously, I have always used a Pressing sheet of some sort….

….to keep the any excess glue off of my iron or ironing board.

But, recently I used it to cover a large area of exposed fusible web….

When I tried lifting the ironing mat….

….some of the fusible web started peeling off with it.

So the next time I needed to iron, I grabbed a piece of Parchment paper…..

… covered the area and ironed…..

And look…..

It peeled off PERFECTLY

From now on, it will be PARCHEMENT PAPER all the way!!!

How about you…..

Do you prefer parchment or pressing sheet?

Jubilee Cope

The other day, I came across an online Reel that blew my mind, and I wanted to share it here. It isn’t about quilting, but about embroidery on a GRAND scale…..

Wouldn’t it be fun to be involved in a project like this?

But, can you imagine 17,000 hours!!!

I love that it has been around for almost 50 years….what a treasure!!

An Unexpected Acceptance

There is an art gallery near me that has an open show each year, and I decided to enter.

You could place 3 entries for the same fee, so I entered “Catherine Wheel of Color”….

…. and Hiding Behind the Red…..

Since I could enter one more, I decided to throw in “Dots Down the Drain”…..

If you remember, this was my Cherrywood Challenge Entry, made during a time of intense physical and emotional exhaustion. I finally gave up on my original idea and just sewed on some dots.

AND, YOU GUESSED IT…….

The only one that was accepted was “Dot’s Down the Drain”!

I NEVER expected this quilt to see the light of day, and am thrilled that it will hang in the Lyndon House 2025 Juried Exhibition!!

Now I need to get a sleeve and label on it!!
