Let’s look at Landscapes

Today, let’s have a look at the Landscape category from the International Quilt Festival.

“Canyon” by Roberta Lagmarsini

The maker painted and dyed the fabrics for this great geological quilt!

“Wulai Waterfall” by Ami Lee

I am enamored with the water in this quilt. I have an idea for a future quilt that needs water, so I spent a great deal of time looking at it…..

It looks like it is mostly thread painting with possibly some painting or sheer white fabrics underneath! Interesting!!

She also made good use of snippets in a portion of the quilt….

“Geometric Gardens – Giverny” by Cindy Pryor, quilted by Lori DeNEst

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I love this one….

“The Burrow” by Maggie Ward

As an aside here….we just returned from 10 days in Scotland and got to ride the “Jacobite Train”….also known as the “Hogwarts Express”. I will post the story and photos soon!!

Isn’t the whimsy of this quilt fun?

“Arizona Desert” by Karen West

“Checheng Village” by Fengmeri Li

This is another quilt from the Taiwan quilters who make outstanding collage quilts!!

Finally…..

“Oquirrh” by Ashelyn Downs, quilted by Jen Ostler

This minimalist approach is so effective!!

Tomorrow, we will see a few more quilts….come back!!

Blooming at IQF

On Tuesday, we looked at one of my favorite exhibits at the International Quilt Festival, and this is the other one….. IN FULL BLOOM”. This exhibit showcases floral-inspired quilts from across the spectrum in lush color and splendor.

WHAT COULD BE BETTER!!!

“In Bloom” by Geraldine Warner

This improvisational piecing style is SO OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, so of course, I am drawn to it!!

“Sunflower” by Tasha Owen

This was painted, printed on fabric, and quilted.

“Oh My Garden” by Karen West

The “Broderie Perse” style of applique was certainly put to good use.

“Blooming Flower of Happiness” by Liu-Chi Yung-Yun

It is hard to show on a photo, but you can see where she added a lighter piece of fabric to many darker strips to give them a 3-dimensional look….

Ingenious!!

“Boho Ficus Elastica” by Rosell Crockett

I have shown this quilt several times on the blog because it was made by my friend Rosie!! I would NEVER have thought to use the black-and-white fabric as an accent on each leaf, but oh my, does it ever work!!!

“Las Calas de Valdivia” by Pilar Donoso

“Whispers of the Acacia” by Bejarano Tzitzi

The “minimalist” view is perfect for this quilt!!

AND, look how the bias tape was applied…..

Isn’t that ingenious!!

“Ephemeral Peonies” by Yoly Tovar, quilted by Angie Roux

Having tried, AND FAILED, a Mileifiori design, I am in AWE of this one!!

I could go on and on about the quilts in this category, but I will leave it here!!

Keep coming back for more!!

“Let’s Get Scrappy is about how to decide, not about what to make.”

Let’s Get Scrappy is an on-demand online course that helps quilters overcome decision fatigue and finally make sense of their overflowing scrap bins. With four hours of step-by-step video instruction, you’ll learn simple systems for organizing, piecing, and pressing your scraps—so you can stop overthinking and start sewing beautiful, coordinated quilts with confidence and joy.

Celebrating Life at IQF

One of my favorite special exhibits each year is “Celebrate Life”, designed to showcase quilts that reflect life-moments — weddings, births, birthdays, memorials — created by quilters who want to celebrate life (or remember it) through fabric and stitch.

Let’s celebrate along with them…..

“Celebration of Love” by Sue hill

The central picture is of her parents on their 66th anniversary, and the hands celebrate their legacy!

“Black & White #1” by Sandra Bruce

I am so impressed with portrait quilts, especially those done in the square grid style.

“Joie de Vivre” by Linda Mazunik

The title says it all!!

AND, there is some incredible threadwork involved too…..

“Precious in His Sight” by Cynthia Thomas, Quilted by Kathryn Walker

This is a “Sew Kind of Wonderful” pattern, and sewn to perfection!!

“Iguana Crazy” by Judy Beskow

The theme for this quilt is “Make the most of every day, and hold the iguana!” Great advice!!

“Memory Walk” by Smitty Price

This is what was said in the artist statement…. “Memory Walk” is based on a photo of my mom and her boyfriend as they walked the halls of their memory care facility. The photo was taken about 2 months before they died….Mom died first, and Bill died exactly two weeks after she passed.

This quilt hit very close to home as the story is almost EXACTLY what happened to my Mom as she aged, and honestly, the people even look like my Mom and her friend, Fred!

“Entrance to the Universe” by Maria Fernanda Luciano

Seeing this quilt sent me down a rabbit-hole (so to speak), looking at optical illusion quilts. There needs to be one of those in my future!!

Finally, this was my favorite quilt in the collection….

“Life Isn’t Perfect, but your Outfit Can Be” by Margie Bendure

Her inspiration came from seeing her nieces lined up for photos at a wedding…so tall, stylish, and fun-loving.

You can’t look at this without smiling and, face it, that is what life is all about!!!

More to come…..

Even more FMQ from IQF

Last Friday we started the walk thru the International Quilt Festival, looking at the best of the free-motion-quilting.

Today, let’s look at a few more…….

I find these to be so inspiring AND daunting!!!

We still have a lot of quilts to see….come back on Sunday!!

Some More Piecing at IQF

On Monday, we worked our way through half of my favorites in the piecing category. Let’s finish them up today….

“Echoes of Creation: by Rex Shrauner

Rex said that he basically designed the quilt for the negative space and he made perfect use of that space….

“California Huipil” by Allison Lockwood

The fun embellishments and embroidery add much to the quilt….

“Irregular Chain” by Daisy Aschehoug

In creating this quilt, she experimented with curved strip sets. I would say that the experiment was successful!!

“Paradigm Shift II” by Amy Krasnansky

When you look at this quilt, remember that it is about 14 inches square….

“Perseverance” by Janet Smith

2,401 pieces, cut at 1/4-inch wide…. YIKES!!!

At first look, this quilt seems fairly simple….

“Heavenly Abode” by Robyn Holden

Each of those “patches” that make up the design are pieced as well…..

This Ingenious quilt is designed in 4 parts and can be hung in an infinite variety of ways, making a new design with each change…..

“No Direction Home: by Randa Mulford

These designs are based on Seminole patterns!

“Garden Twists” by Karen Eckmeier

Aren’t these “color twist” blocks fun….

This next quilt is outstanding…..

“Black & White & Red All Over” by Randa Mulford

She took the classic “Millefiori design and went crazy with it!! Look how perfect these blocks are….

I especially like how the red stars escape the design and head off into the border!!

“Dazzling Starburst” by Romana Frys

All I can say is WOW…. Look at those points and look at that amazing quilting….

Well, that ends the Pieced tour….be sure to come back for more from the International Quilt Festival!!
