Abstract Quilts – Part 1

I don’t do a lot of abstract quilting, so this normally isn’t a favorite category, but this year’s entries had lots to enjoy.

Let’s start with some sweet colors!!

“Bloom” by Laura Shaw Feit

The colors and their interaction with the black makes this quilt!!

“Tangency” by Karen K. Stone

I love the spiral piecing in this quilt, but I wondered exactly how she put them all together. The answer was easy….she used raw-edge applique!!

THAT would certainly make things easier!!

This quilt won one of the Judges Choice awards…..

“Flowering Bush” by Luydmila Bronshtein

I love the soft colors and stripes in this one!!

“Zenith” by Monica Fernandez

It doesn’t show as much in the photo, but the perspective achieved was awesome!!

“Vincent” by Karen K. Stone

“Fractured Moonrise”by Robin Tilsworth

I love the lines and curves mixed together here!!

This was the winner of the Blue ribbon in Abstract….

“Red Molly” by Karen K. Stone

If you noticed, many of the quilts that I shared today all had a similar theme….. a mixture of straight lines, with overtones of circles.

I am truly enamored with this type of quilt right now.

But don’t worry…..there are plenty more Abstract quilts to enjoy.

Come back on Tuesday!!!

Houston, Here We Come

Today, my friend Linda and I head to the Atlanta airport and fly to Houston for the International Quilt Festival.

It is such a fun trip as we meet up with other quilters in the Atlanta airport, and begin our journey to the “happiest place on earth”…. at least for quilters!!

I am looking forward to my first Tex Mex…..

….my first Cajun food…..

…..my first biscuits and gravy…..

….the vendor mall…..

AND….of course…..the quilts!!!

If you are visiting, too, I would love to meet up and say hello. Shoot me an email, and maybe we can spend a few minutes oohing and aahing over the amazing quilts!!

AND, over the next few weeks, I will be showing my favorites from the show!!

IQF Entries are OPEN

This week I received an email announcing that the Entries are now open for the 2025 International Quilt Festival Judged Show.

And yes, I am planning to enter two of last year’s scrap quilts!!

BUT, I was extremely interested to see that the categories had changed.

They still have….

  • Abstract
  • Applique
  • Handmade
  • Pictorial
  • Pieced

BUT, they have added these exciting categories….

  • Alternative Techniques
  • Animal Kingdom
  • Balanced Piecing and Applique
  • Naturescape
  • People, Portraits. and Figures

Don’t those sound fun!!

Sadie, the Saddle-Billed Stork (finished in 2023) was refused last year, but I may try her again in the Animal Kingdom division!! Keep your fingers crossed!!

SO…..which category will YOU be entering???

Houston Livestock Show – Take 2

Yesterday we looked at a number of quilts from the “Houston Livestock Show” exhibit at the International Quilt Festival

Today, let’s see a few more!!

This first one is using the fabrics from the Modern Quilt Guild Challenge of 2023…..

“Cosmic Shores” by Sarah Ruiz

I love how she combined all of the different stars, compasses and New York Beauty blocks.

“Flower Power Reboot” by Ann Moore

This quilt is made almost entirely of reverse applique….

…with some wonderful quilting added in…..

Here is another pixelated flower vase (we looked at one yesterday)…..

“Tiny Blossoms” by Julie Mercer

The quilting style completely changes the look of the quilt….

“In the Beginning” by Gillerma Lozano, quilted by Debbie Brown

Finally…..

“At Granny’s” by Ellie Stuckey

This SWEET quilt features hand applique, hand-sewn yo-yo’s , hand an machine quilting, English paper piecing, and scalloped edging.

WHEW!!!

She said that the quilt was inspired by vintage stamps and that she wanted to give it the feel of driving thru Texas’ vast landscape during wildflower season!!
