One of my favorite exhibits each year at the International Quilt Festival is the “Houston Livestock Show” quilts!! This year was no exception…..
“Drragon Star” by Stephanie Tarver, quilted by Cathy Tullos
These Judy Neimeyer quilts always shine, and I love the coloration of this one. She said that the colors reminded her of Texas!!
It is also beautifully quilted…..
…
“Pixelated Spring Vase” by Anglea McKenzie, quilted by Ted & Cheryl Tessitore
I am not sure which is more impressive……the 2,300 2.5-inch squares precisely placed into the flower vase or the wonderful quilting that adds so much to the design!
…
Flora & Friends” by Noreen Borys
This is from Emily Taylor’s collage pattern called “Garden Party”. The blocks are beautifully collaged and the quilting is the perfect accompaniment!!
…
“Two Chicks” by Missy Klimitchek
This was the logo designed by two friends as they opened a quilt shop together, and it is SO DARN CUTE!!
I especially laugh at the expressions on their faces!!
…
“Color My World” by Sally Robinson, quilted by Helen Rode
I love how people personalize this particular design. In this case, she added a NASA rocket because both she and her husband both worked there.
I also appreciated the center that she included…..
There are a few more to see, so come back tomorrow!!

Today let’s take a walk thru the “Tactile Architecture” exhibit from the International Quilt Festival.
This is one of my favorite exhibits because it was my first accepted entry into the IQF in 2017…..
It was such fun to see it hanging there!
The exhibit in 2024 was magnificent as well!!
“Winter Wonderland Wanderlust” by O.V. Brantley, quilted by Maxine Moore
We saw an exhibit of her quilts in 2023 and almost all include an angel!!
…
This quilt was probably my favorite in the exhibit…..
“Smallville” by Cyndi Russell, quilted by Patty Wilson
It was made from a commercial pattern…. “Tiny Houses and Tiny Trees” by Janeen van Niekirk from Quilt Art Designs. You should DEFINITELY have a look at the website!!
Just look at these fun designs….
….or these….
…and the quilting adds so much…..
…
From traditional and cute to sleek and modern…..
“St Regis: Chicago River View” by Rebecca Dickson
I am particularly enamored with the sky!!
…
“College Hill” by Anna Chupa
This is a montage of photos taken during walks in Easton, PA. The center is professionally printed and then machine quilted. I love the border quilting….
…
“Victoria San Francisco” by Marina Panzhinskaya
The picture came from a coloring book called “Victorian Buildings of San Francisco” by Shirley Salzman.
I love that she did the entire design in thread!!
THAT is right up my alley!!
…
“The Cabin Door” by Margaret Noah
How many of us have tons of photos of interesting doors? I LOVE that she turned one of her photos into this gorgeous quilt!!
…
What do you think of when you see this quilt…..
“Tang Martini” by AnnMarie Cowley
I immediately thought of a motel in the 1960’s, although the design is from a 1950’s diner!!
…
“From Log Cabins to Skyscrapers” by Judy Beskow
Believe it or not, these are LOG CABIN blocks!! The challenge was to use Log Cabin blocks and Hoffman Skyscraper fabric!!
I am thinking that this quilt took a LOT of planning!
…
“Cresstwood 1” by Maggie Vanderweit
The quilt is based on photos of the open framing in a basement studio as her house was being built. It is professional printed and machine quilted.
…
“Amsterdam” by Marlene Fenoglietto
She did a wonderful job of recreating the colorful buildings.
The exhibit was so much fun and I long to have another quilt exhibited there in some future year.
Have you ever made a quilt based on architecture?

There was one exhibit from the International Quilt Festival that I found truly interesting. It was called “Finally finished”. Here is the description…..
Let’s look at a few of the quilts…..
This top was made circa 1850’s. Teresa loved the large open areas and filled them with gorgeous quilting!!
…and look at the stuffed berries!!
…
This top was a garage sale find!!
….that she quilted with modern quarter-inch grids.
…
I love the “Trip Around the World” variation…..
…and appreciate the free-motion quilting motifs that she added….
…
This simple design…..
….called for some equally simple (but effective) quilting….
It was a sweet exhibit ….
….filled with classic quilt designs!!
I truly enjoyed thinking about what the original makers would think of their quilts now.
This bring me to a dilemma that I have been considering…. come back tomorrow and I will share more!!

Yesterday we looked at a number of the camouflage quilts from the Studio Art Quilt Association. Let’s examine a few more today.
This first quilt uses Batiks, Hand-Dyes and Commercials Print fabrics…..
:Uncompahgrre Fritillary — An Endangered Pollinator” by Luana Rubin
…
I love the foliage in this piece, along with the “hidden” Iguana!!
“Blue Cayman Iguana” by Amada Preson Araujo
The artist added so much depth to the foliage….
…
I had to read the artist statement for this quilt before I saw the elephant…..
“I Spy an Elephant” by Carol Bridges
She says…. “I love the idea that an elephant and a tree can resemble each other – a sense of camouflage, so to speak – yet the size disparity contradicts the elephant’s ability to blend into its surroundings. I am sure the elephant hopes, “If I hide behind this tree, they won’t see me”!”
…
“Bothus” by Lindsay Olson
This quilt has some wonderful hand work….
…
I love the vibrant greens in this quilt, not to mention the cute lizard…..
“His Leafy Refuge” by Sara SharpOP
Once again, a plethora of techniques, including machine applique, thread-painting, photo printing, machine quilting, outline stitching, pastel painting, and faced binding
…
The delicateness of this piece caught my eye…..
“Orchid Praying Mantis” by Jennifer Day
Of course, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the quilting!!
She used 62 different colors of thread!!
…
Finally, this whole-cloth, painted piece…..
“Twilight Flight” by Janet Ruth Davis
The design was painting with Inktense Watercolor Pencils!!
That is it for my view of the SAQA Camouflage exhibit!!
If you had joined the challenge, what would you have done??

Each year at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, the SAQA Group (Studio Art Quilt Associates) presents a display of quilts following a specific theme. This year it was
….CAMOUFLAGE!!!
I truly appreciated the different techniques and ideas that were used to meet the theme.
“Green Pepper & Gecko” by Mieko Washio
While I don’t necessarily understand this quilt, I am enamored with the embroidery techniques used. Just look at all of the outstanding detail….
And, this ruching is some of the smallest I have ever seen…
….
This one is similar with tons of hand and machine techniques….’
“Poetic Camoflage” byt Shin-hee Chin
Have a closer look at the thread overlays that “camouflage” the quilt underneath!!
….
Next…..
“Watching & Waiting” by Claire Passmore
Materials used in this quilt include fabric and thread, eco felt, ink blocks, fabric medium, paracord, plastic bottle, acrylic paint and mica powder!!
I am not sure what some of those are!!
I especially enjoyed the quilting on the leaves….
…
“Flamenco Dance” by Debra Goley
Techniques include machine piecing, reverse applique, paint for shading, satin, and free-motion stitching.
…
I love just about everything that Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry does and I have welcomed seeing how she has transformed her quilting over the years.
“Personal Transparency” by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry
The quilt was designed in a digital format, using transparent layers. It was printed at Spoonflower and then quilted.
…
This next quilt was fun….
“Spot the Dot” by Paola Machetta
This appears to be pieced improvisationally and I love the piecing and quilting in the background.
…
“Island” by Betty Busby
As with most of these quilts, there is a ton of layering going on!!
…
This camouflage is almost TOO good….
“In Plain Sight” by Lisa Yalme
She started making a simple bargello quilt and then decided it needed “something else”. Enter the leopard!!
One thing I liked about this story is that it was displayed once and then she added the tail!!
As I always say, if you aren’t happy with the quilt that just means that it isn’t finished yet!!
…
The point of this next quilt is that zebras will huddle together to confuse their predators….where does one zebra end and another begin…..
“Hidden in the Crowd” by Patricia Arensen
But, my favorite part are the birds hidden in plain sight…..
Also, look at the line of special quilting among the pebbles!!
OKAY….there are more to come in this “camouflage” exhibit. Come back tomorrow and maybe you can see them….HA!!
