QuiltCon2023 Group Quilts

For the last three days, we have been looking at the Community Quilts that were made by various Modern Quilt Guilds.

These quilts continue in the same vein with several people coming together to make something of beauty!!

This first quilt was probably my favorite in the category….

“Effloresecent Midnight” by Marci Debetaz and a group from Duson, Louisiana

Marci said that there is no deep meaning to the quilt….it just celebrates the love of flowers, embroidery and an electric color scheme!!

The next quilt keeps the same color scheme but leads with abstract shapes rather than flowers….

“Welcome to the Playground” by Linda Morrison and a group from Vancouver, British Columbia

The group members were asked to make “exuberant blocks using geometric shapes, swoopy curves, and thin lines in bright colors on a navy background”.

Some of these designs look like they would be fun to make…..

Here is the explanation for the next quilt…..

“Exquisite Quilt #2” by Abigail Vargas and a group of quilters from Winters, California

That whole process sounds like a lot of fun to be part of!!!

The third-place ribbon went to this quilt…..

“Ray’s Georgia” by Diane Lyles and a group from Madison, Alabama

This quilt is a tribute to the iconic musician “Ray Charles” who lost his sight as a child. The main body of the quilt depicts, in braille, the first verse of the song that made Charles famous….” Georgia On My Mind”.

Being from Georgia, I ESPECIALLY like this one!!

The 2nd-place ribbon went to….

“Darkest Before Dawn” by Ellyn Zinsmeister and a group from Allen, Texas

The improv log cabin blocks each contains some of the Kona 2023 Color of the year…..Cosmos!!

The 1st-place ribbon went to this quilt…..

“Sashes” by Elizabeth Ray and a group of quilters from Bentonville, Arkansas

Each column contains improv components made with 2 colors and using designs that uniquely represent its maker.

What a fun idea!!!

Unfortunately, I was running out of time when I got to this category so there aren’t as many photos but I hope that you enjoyed seeing these few!!

Tomorrow we will look at one of the tenets of the Modern Quilt Movement…..negative space!!

Quilts That Do Good….

Today we will look at a few more “Community Quilts” from QuiltCon. To learn more about this category, check out the post from a few days back.

I must have really liked this quilt since I photographed it on two different days…..

“Diamond Transitions” by the Jacksonville Modern Quilt Guild

I like the color transitions but the quilting is what makes the quilt!!

This palm block quilt is intriguing……

“Palm Block, Cool Color Shift, Hawaiian Style” by the Oahu Modern Quilt Guild

I love how the color shift is asymmetrical!!

This tessellation design works beautifully in a quilt…..

It was paper pieced from a pattern based on a woodblock print by Mel Beach….WONDERFUL!!

Take a look at this one…..

“Leaving a Light on for You” by the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild

I love how the light shows thru!! And how the square quilting design fits so well with the pattern.

The Denver Metro Modern Quilt Guild gave us this one…..

“Cabin View” by the Denver Metro Modern Quilt Guild

I am sure that this is the view from many of their member’s porches!!

This group emphasized the yellow end of the color spectrum…..

“Valley Green” by the Philadelphia Modern Quilt Guild

I particularly like the curvy quilting against the intense angles of the diamonds.

Now, this is my favorite….probably of the whole category…..

“The Adventures of Cam E. Leon” by the Brisbane Modern Quilt Guild

I absolutely love the whimsy of this quilt and that fact that “Leon” (read the title) does disappear into the background!!

OKAY….that is it for the “Community Quilts” from QuiltCon.

There were many more that I didn’t photograph but I loved the idea behind these quilts and the obvious camaraderie that proceeded from their making.

There are still a few Quilt Con categories to explore, so stay tuned for more!!

Community Outreach Quilts – part 2

Yesterday we looked at a few of the quilts made for the sole purpose of raising money for special projects.

Here are 5 more……

This first one was made by the “Discord Quilters Guild”…..sounds like there is a story here!!

So….here is the quilt…..

“9 Discord Strangers Make A Quilt” by the Discord Quilters Guild

….and…..here is the story……

Don’t you love that!!

There is so much movement in the next one…..

“Oasis for Teens – Interwoven in the Community” by the Music City Modern Quilt Guild (Nashville)

They chose the interwoven pattern from @LoadBeholdStitchery (she spoke at my guild and is wonderful!!!) as a reminder to all of us that we are all interwoven and our success and failure depend upon each other.

In was fun to “go swimming” in this next quilt…..

“Flow” by the Lancaster Modern Quilt Guild

In their statement, they talk about the color shift and soft tranquil flowing curves.

That is exactly how it makes me feel……tranquil!!!

Along the same “undersea” theme……

“Into the Deep” by the Inland Empire Modern Quilt Guild

I can just see schools of fish swimming along!!

They worked together in a three-day session and came up with the completed top at the end of that time!!

This was one of my favorites in this category…..

“Radiata” by the Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild

In the artist’s statement, they said that the design was inspired by the unique shell markings on a radiated tortoise!! They used paper piecing and a controlled selection of colors to create the blocks and establish the color shift. Applique circles enhance the color shift….

….and probably hid lots of unmatched points at the center of each block (my addition)

Whatever they did, I truly love this quilt!! To enjoy it more, make it smaller in your screen or squint at it. The color changes are SO effective!!

That’s it for today…..tomorrow we finish up this category.

If you enjoy this blog, please share it with your friends!!!

Thank you…….

Community Outreach at QuiltCon

This category needs some explanation…..

There were two colorways that groups could pick from. Most were from the blue/green/yellow that you will see shortly, but there was one in the Pink colorway that I really liked. So, let’s start with it….

“Fibonacci Movement” by The Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild

The group got the idea from “show-and-tell” quilt and took it to new heights. I love how the center disappears and reappears at the corners.

The quilting really enhanced the design….

This quilt was made by the host guild for the QuiltCon23….the Greater Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild…..

“Take Flight” by the Greater Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild

I am drawn to the colors as they flow across the quilt.

This would actually make a good group quilt because it could be paper pieced, ensuring that all of the blocks were the same size!!

The color placement in this next quilt works wonders….

“Virtual Segments” by the Mexico Modern Quilt Guild

This is from the Artist’s Statement…..

“A constellation needs each and every one of its parts since one element does not exist without the other. In a way, this represents us as a group of quilters working together….making our constellation with each one of our segments, sewing them by hand one by one.”

How cool!!

The next quilt had a similar thought….

“Interaction” by the German Modern Quilters

“As the small and big, slightly wonky and randomly arranged triangles sometimes interact like teeth on a zipper, we as quilters – and people in general – interact as much. We build communities and friendships. We find groups of like-minded people to work together….to create.”

This next quilt added a couple of other fabrics to the mix and it really lightens the design…..

“Spring Has Sprung” by the Canyon Top Stitchers

I love the idea behind this next quilt….can you guess what it was…..

“Morse Code” by the Lynchburg Modern Quilt Guild

WHAT A FUN IDEA!!

It will take TWO more days to finish these amazing quilts so be sure to subscribe to the blog so you won’t miss a single one!!!

Amazing Applique from QuiltCon

Today, let’s finish up my favorites from the Applique Category at QuiltCon 2023…..

This first quilt took the 3rd-place ribbon……

“Where We Connect” by Cassandra Beaver

Cassandra used a reverse applique technique to create the top. Dark blue was the top fabric and light blue was underneath. It reminds me a lot of a Mola design, but without the colors.

This next quilt won the 2nd-place ribbon…..

“Out of the Blue” by Linda Branting

She started out by cutting a stack of rings in various sizes and then played with the actual fabric until she found a design. The fabrics are Oakshott cross-dyes.

The quarter-inch grid quilting adds so much dimension…..

The first-place ribbon went to this beauty……

“Fazed” by Scott Murkin

Now, I like appliqueing circles, but this one went a bit far…..

The background is one piece of fabric. Can you imagine man handling that while you were appliqueing?

The last two are a different style of applique…..

Meet Frida….

“Viva Frida!” by Mary Maben

The shapes look very cohesive but are really made up of a lot of small pieces of fabric…..

The last is a whimsical quilt that I can identify with…..

“I Woke Up Like This” by Timna Tarr

The quilt is constructed using a “Stitched Mosaic” technique which includes applique within each 2-inch square. The squares are sewn together into rows. It is ALL turned edge applique!! The only fusing is the catchlights in the eyes!!

AMAZING!!!

Now I am REALLY inspired to do some applique…..how about you??
