Final favorites from Small Pictorials

I enjoyed the pictorial quilts so much and here are the last few of my favorites….

There were a number of landscape quilts that made marvelous use of embellishments….

“Valley View, Yosemite” by Sandra Mollon

I am especially enamored with reflections and this quilt accomplished those perfectly!!

..

“Dancing Oaks” by Sue Colozzi

Look at the threadwork here….

“Moonlit” by Wendy L. Starn

The quilting on this one is outstanding….

“Peaceful Snowy Woods” by Karen Kuske

Interestingly, the applique pieces were treated with Mod Podge to avoid fraying. Have you ever heard of that before?

Looking closely at the appliques, they sure are smooth edges….

“Stone Bridge” by Li-Hsiang Wang

“Sunrise at Chapoquoit Marsh” by Sue

On this one, I appreciated the bead flowers and the 3-D leaves…..

I ADORE this quilt…..

“In Full Bloom” by Karen Hull Sienk

I love a garden that is chaotic and covered in flowers and this speaks to my soul!!

The quilting adds so much dimension to the petals and leaves….

Finally, this one is very different for a “pictorial” quilt, but I sure do like it….

“Apple blossom” by Sherrill Ash

Well, that’s it for the Pictorial Quilts from the International Quilt Festival.

We only have 5 more days of our IQF tour so keep coming back to see all of the outstanding quilts!!

More Small Pictorial Quilts

Continuing on our journey down the “Small Pictorial Quilt” row….

This quilt was given one of the “Judges Choice” awards……

“A Prairie Evening” by Deanna Corrigan

I have long loved these strip-pieced landscapes. Maybe I will try one some day!!

This one is so very simple but SO effective….

We often saw Echidnas when we lived in Australia, and I immediately knew what this quilt was about.

“Unguarded Moment” by Susan de Vanny

There were several exciting touches, including see-through areas in the quilt…

….and OUTSTANDING quilting….

The quilting on this next one makes it look like it strip-pieced too, but it is pieced in blocks instead of strips…..

“Timeless Moment” by Mimi Ghauri-Young

“Smooth” by Tonya Littmann

Have a read of the artist statement….

It was fun to search the quilt for small touches and embellishments….

This quilt is cute…..

“Mom’s English Cottage”by Patricia Gardebled, quilted by Barbara Harrison

….but I truly appreciated the embroidery…… just look at this roof….

“Dogwood: The Promise” by Andrea Brokenshire

This quilt by Andrea Brokenshire uses her typical hand-turned applique on top of a confetti quilted background.

I enjoyed Andrea’s exhibit in last year’s show….check out this post for more about her process, including an interview about her process….

Let’s finish up today with this AMAZING zebra…..

“What A Wonderful World” by Li-Hui-Yin

There is always a large contingent of landscape quilters from New Taipei City. Taiwan. I would LOVE to be part of their group!!

….

Come back tomorrow and we will finish up this category!!

Small Pictorial Quilts

Yesterday we saw a number of larger pictorial quilts. Today let’s see some of the smaller ones.

FIRST PLACE….

“El Legado de Los Maestros” by Eva Garmendia

This quilt is NOT painted, but uses only fabrics. The photo is of the library of the Mafra Palace in Portugal. However, the quilter paid tribute to Jinny Beyer by placing a page from one of her books on the book stand!!

SECOND PLACE

This quilt is by Kestrel Michaud who also had quilt that was a big winner. Her applique process is very detailed and realistic!!

“Bremen Town Musicians” by Kestrel Michaud

THIRD PLACE…..

“Is My Planet Broken” by Dale Stuart

This quilt has many exciting parts, but I absolutely love the hair…..

I love the whimsical nature of this next quilg…..

“Joy” by Leslie Rose

I love the simplicity of this quilt….

“Nantucket flyer” by Theresa Olson

This quilt was made in memory of the days when the maker and her husband would put bikes in the back of his small airplane, fly to Nantucket, and ride bikes around the island for the day. Such a sweet memory!!

Look at the details in these gentlemen’s boots….

“The Haskell News” by Amy Cavaness

I feel like I once knew those men!!

“Wetland Romance” by Kathy McNeil

She painted the background fabric and then appliqued the other elements in place.

Did you notice the cute frogs in the border?

The final one for today was this amazing piece…..

“A la Deriva – Adrift” by Esther Delgado Pico

The original artwork was by Eric Zener and was meant to invite you to enter a moment of inner piece.

Come back tomorrow and we will spent more time in the small pictorial quilts!!

Pictorial Quilts – my favorite

I LOVE pictorial quilts. I am amazed at where people find inspiration and how they turn that inspiration into amazing quilts!!

The category we are looking at today is the “LARGE” Pictorial Quilts…..

Prepared to be awed!!

FIRST PLACE…….

These two quilters have had quilts in Houston for as many years as I can remember. All of them include children and dogs….a fun combination…..

“Joyful Spring” by Hiroko Miyama with Masanobu Miyama

This quilt is REVERSE appliqued with over 4,000 pieces, 1,900 leaves and 300 apple tree flowers…..OH MY!!

I love how they did the leaves, grouping them together with various colors!!

And look at the joy on this child’s face….

\

SECOND PLACE……

This quilt is inspired by the spiral column in a cathedral in Ferentino, Italy……

“Ferentino” by Janet Fogg

It was hard to tell, but I believe that the columns were hand painted…..

It was a striking quilt to see up close!!

THIRD PLACE…..

This quilt is an interpretation of the “Beauty and the Beast” story…..

“Oak and Rose” by Becky Prior, quilted by Jackie Brown

There were many techniques involved….hand applique, embellishment, embroidery, painting, inking, drawing, Broderie Perse and reverse applique!!

I love that she used whatever technique she needed to achieve the mastserpiece!

“Weir Fishing” by Debora Barlow

This quilt was started in 2019 with dyeing fabrics and collecting organza. In 2023, she started working on it again, using cotton and organza for the transparency in the water, and then using hand-applique to add the birds.

This fused mosaic applique contains more than 40,000 1/2-inch squares!!

“Serenity” by Anita Armstrong

There are so many whimsical touches in this quilt, including otters….

….and other underwater creatures….

This was probably the most striking quilt of the entire show…..

“Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Man” by Alexandra Curran

These portraits of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, are a fitting tribute to the man, showing his innocence when first elected and the toll that carrying his country on his shoulders has exacted!

A photo from 1910 is the inspiration for this quilt…..

“Another Day” by Gloria Zirges

I love the details on the oxen….especially their eyelashes….

“Cowgirl Runway” by Margery Hedges

In particular, I was drawn to this wonderful stone wall…..

“Cliff PAlace Dreams” by Susan Madden with “Blocks Without Borders” Art Quilt Group

I have seen many quilts created in this manner (where a photo is split into sections), but this one is one of the best!!

I love the details added by the quilting….

We will end this category with a Sunflower…..

“No Plan Bee” by Barbara Lange

You have to get close to see it, but the center of the flower is made of tiny pieced shapes….

…and the radiating quilting is outstanding…..

There are plenty more Pictorial quilts left to see….although in the “Small” category.

Be sure to come back…..

Cherrywood Challenge – Finale!

For the last two days we have been enjoying the Cherrywood challenges that were displayed at the International Quilt Festival.

Today, let’s finish up with a few of my favorites…..

I am constantly amazed at the imagination of quilters…..

I will admit that I am not a huge “Wizard of Oz” fan, but I do remember the field of poppies in the movie…..

I love the play on words with the title….

This next quilt was in the youth division…..

I love that people printed photos on the fabrics!! I had never thought about doing that!

Isn’t this a sweet design….and look at that border!!

I love the detailed piecing in this one….

When I first saw this one, I didn’t notice that the man was in camo. That makes it even sweeter!!

Once again, I love the simplicity of this one….

I hope that you have enjoyed the challenges. I picked up the fabrics for the 25 challenge…..

I can’t wait to start playing with these!!

Come back tomorrow and we will look at some of the pictorial quilts!!
