I’m Seeing RED!

And…..No, I am not mad!!

When I posted yesterday about making an optical illusion quilt, I started remembering one that I made as part of a guild challenge back in 2000. We picked color swatches out of a hat and my color was RRRREEEEDDDD!!!

I had wanted to try an optical illusion quilt and found a great pattern in this book that just happened to be on my shelf…..

Sadly, this book is now out of press!

This is the quilt that I made…..

It was amazingly easy to make, but I did have to be EXTREMELY precise in my cutting and piecing.

Since most illusions are made with straight lines they do lend themselves to fun quilt designs.

I did a bit of research for books and found these…..

Now what I REALLY want to do is to design one myself so it may be a while before I get one made.

But I can always dream!!

And, truth be known, my TRUE desire is to make something like this…..

.

Have you made an optical illusion quilt??  Did you enjoy it??

One of my favorite things about quilting is motivating others and helping them in their quilting journey. As part of this endeavor, I LOVE to present programs and workshops to groups and guilds around the world. All of my programs work well with Zoom meetings, and I would love to speak to your group.

Mental Floss

I LOVE getting emails from readers and the other day I received one from Judy. She said…..

“Since you enjoy finding quilting inspiration from your surroundings, I thought of you immediately when I saw this from Mental Floss on Facebook.  It would make a really trippy quilt!”

The photo that she referred me to was this one…..

It is one of those designs were it looks like the horizontal lines are not parallel, but they are!!

Judy said that it would be fun to make a quilt like this and I totally agree. I wonder if it would be possible to reproduce the optical illusion.

What do you think?

The article with the photo is interesting and talks about why the mind perceives these horizontal lines to be crooked. If you are interested, it is a quick read!!

Thanks, Judy for sharing this with me.

I’m Seeing Red!

….A little late because I forgot to post it yesterday!!!

No, I am not mad!!!

This is the title of yet another challenge quilt that I created back in 2000.

This time the guild had a color challenge and the color that I selected out of the hat was RED.

I wanted it to be bold and audacious and finally settled on a pattern from the book “Op-Art Quilts” by Marilyn Doheny…..

The construction of the quilt was relatively simple, as long as I CAREFULLY followed the cutting instructions. I remember that I didn’t have much extra fabric which meant that proper cutting was even MORE important!!

I even found some of the strip sets when I opened my “Pandora’s Box” of miscellaneous fabrics!!!

I was especially proud of the the two borders that I added. I really felt that the second “strip set” border added a lot to the design.

I wanted to keep the corners simple to really emphasize the bold pattern. I entered it into our guild quilt show and remember that one of the judges said that there was too much movement and no place for the eye to settle!!! It was one of the few times that I wanted to reply to the review and say DUH!!!
