Today we are starting to look at my FAVORITE category….PIECING.

The definition for QuiltCon was this…..

And believe me….they did!!!

I LOVE the fabrics in this quilt…..

She paired Shot Cottons and Grey linen to achieve this effect….and LOOK at all of the sides in each of those pieces!!

In the artist statement for this next quilt, she encourages you to take a “Second Glance” to see the 8 circles looking back at you…..

I am not exactly sure I see the circles, but I like the quilt!!!

The next one was definitely a favorite…..wait….do I say that about everyone I show????

Just look at the intricacy of the piecing…..

And of course, the machine quilting certainly “floats my boat”!!

Next, we have “366 Kites”…..

You MUST read the artist’s statement…..

JUST……WOW!!!!

I found the next one interesting because of the circles that I played with back in September…..

I really want to study this one some more to see if I can figure out exactly how she pieced it!!

Okay….this next one enthralls me…..

She made such good use of her striped fabrics and I absolutely love the way that some “cakes” are right side up, some are right side down and some can’t seem to make up their mind.

Yesterday, I posted several quilts from QuiltCon-2023, each in the “Log Cabin” category. Here are a few more…..

This first quilt took the 1st place ribbon in the Log Cabin Challenge……

It is an amazing example of geometry in quilting…..

And, adding the concentric circle quilting just tops it off perfectly!!

This next quilt was made in the same style as one of the minimalist quilts. This entire piece is cut from one fabric, but layered with black batting. So, the value changes are where the batting is shining thru the single layers of fabric…..

Have a closer look…..

This one reminds me of the old TV test patterns!!!

A closer looks shows that she construted black and white strip sets and then used those strips to build her log cabin…..

Simply AMAZING!!

The last one is a portrait of Maya Angelou….and yes….it is made out of log cabin blocks…..

It is a huge quilt and you have to back away from it for it to look really good. YOU may like it better if you squint just a bit at the picture!!

In his viewer statement he said that this is the second portrait that he has made. The first one was squares and triangles without the log cabin portion. He made this one, challenging himself to use log cabins. He answered the question that we always ask….it took about 100 hours to create and there are approximatley 2500 pieces in it!!!

Okay….that wraps up the Log Cabin Challenge!!!

As I mentioned yesterday, I love that the Modern Quilt Movement often builds off of traditional blocks. Today we look at the Log Cabin Block challenge……

In this quilt, the purple and orange battle it out for prominence!!

I appreciated her artist statement and thought you might like to read it too……

What a fun way to make a quilt!!!

This next quilt is the epitome of a Minimal Log Cabin. In her statement, she said she wanted to deepen the saturation of the fabrics as the size increased. I think that she accomplished that!!!

I Love the textures that sprung from the quilting (quilted by Monika Jozsa).

This quilt is based on the nest of a Funnel Web Spider…..one of the deadliest spiders in Australia…..

I am not sure about the inspiration but it has an amazing perspective!!

This improv Nine-Patch is certainly colorful!!!…..

I really liked this quilt……

I love the improvisational piecing in each of the strip sections.

This quilt started off with a bunch of curved strips and grew from there…..

I loved her comment about this improv piecing process. She said it was “at times freeing and oftentimes frustrating.” Haven’t we ALL felt that way??

As I wandered into this category, I wondered exactly what constituted a Minimalist Quilt. The answer was waiting for me……

EXTREME SIMPLIFICATION….how is that done??

The first quilt that I saw was this one……

…and I LOVED the simplification!!!

There were two “white on white” quilts that were each interesting in their own way. The first one…..

….has great quilting to accent the circles, but when you get closer to the circles…..

…you can see that the textures are from various types of fabric. It was ingenious!!!

The next “white” quilt……

….looked like it was an incredible example of precision piecing.

BUT NO….instead it is a white fabric over a black batting so the white parts are where the seam allowances keep the batting from showing thru. Have a closer look…..

The feeling of transparency is even further emphasized in this quilt!!

I enjoy the green lines formed by improvisational piecing….

It is so stunning with the black background fabric!!

There were others that I enjoyed, but this last one was my FAVORITE…..

Now you are probably looking at this and seeing a blue circle set on four different shades of purple fabric…..

PSYCH!!!!!

The purple background fabric is all ONE fabric and the color changes are made with the quilting threads. Look closely at this zoom-in photo…..

When it is up this close, you can’t see the color change but when you step away…..it is ASTOUNDING!!!

I definitely consider this to be Minimalisn at its best!!!
