Miscellany from the Glyptotek

Since this is the 5th post about the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, you might have the idea that I truly enjoyed my several hours there. And you would be right!!

I found it to be an exciting gallery and I especially appreciated some of the extra bits…..

They had this display of powdered paints……

Kids who were visiting had the opportunity to go on a scavenger hunt in the gallery…..

I was interested in these plaster models for decorative elements outside the gallery……

….reading that the model was cast based on a drawing, and then the actual decoration was carved from granite. The plaster pieces were saved and can be used as backups if the original decorations deteriorate.

I asked where I could find these carvings and was directed to the outside eaves…..

As usual, I found a number of things that reminded me of quilts…..

This sarcophagus is nothing but a log cabin design….

….and don’t get me started about the tile floors…..

I’ll show more of those in the next weeks!!

Finally, I turned myself into a piece of art by posing in a mirror that was part of a new installation!!

Since it has taken 7 posts to talk about ONE day, this trip diary may go on for a while!! However, I will intersperse more as the weeks go on.

After all, I am home now and back to quilting so WE need to get back to quilting too!

Thanks for joining me!!!

Sculptures, sculptures, sculptures

Today I wanted to share some of the sculptures that I enjoyed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.

There were several galleries that looked just like this…..

One of my favorite things is when the sculptor can convey fabric in MARBLE.

I especially loved the sheerness of the fabric in this one…..

HOW did he do this……

I also loved her feet……

They were not petite at all but much like MY size 10 foot!!

I laughed at the pose for this guy…..

“Docker” by Constantin Meunier

It looks like a layout from GQ Magazine!!!

…..and then there were the expressions on these two……

I kind of know how they feel!!!

The expression on this man’s face says it all…..

“Distaste Personified” by Honore-victorin Daumier

I love that it is named “Distaste Personified”!!

There were two small sculptures that seemed whimsical….

Finally, Michael and I once visited the Rodin Gallery in Paris and we both were enamored with his work. I always appreciate when I can see a bunch of his works in one place, and “The Thinker” is one of my favorites!!

“The Thinker” by Auguste Rodin

Come back tomorrow and we will finish up at the Glyptotek!!

This art made an Impression!!

I remember in 10th grade when my World History teacher taught a section about impressionist painters. I was in LOVE, but I never expected that I would get to see any of their paintings in person.

So, when I climbed the long stairs in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen…..

…..I was thrilled to find a gallery of impressionist paintings!!

I have long been a Monet fan and loved this one…..

“Shadows on the Sea” by Claude Monet

….but was surprised to see that these two were also by him……

“The Artist’s Son” by Claude Monet

.

“Windmill & Boats Near Zaandam” by Claude Monet

The same goes for Picasso. I truly enjoy many of his abstract pieces but was surprised to see this realistic portrait…..

“Spanish Lady in Crinoline”by Pablo Picasso

You can always pick out the Toulouse-Lautrec pieces…..

“Portrait of Monsieur Delaporte” by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

I feel like many of his works contain men in top hats!!

And then there are Degas and his ballerinas…..

“Two Dancers” by Edgar Degas

I like this self-portrait of Paul Cezanne….

“Self Portrait with Bowler Hat” by Paul Cezanne

He was able to recreate so much texture!!

And finally, this wonderful Renoir……

“Young Girls” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Of course, anytime I see a Renoir, I am reminded of the “Night of Living Art” episode from Gilmore Girls……

.

Since tomorrow is Free-Motion Friday, I have a BUNCH of designs taken from one rock carving. Come back for more!!

Glyptotek – Part 1

First of all, what is a Glyptotek?

According to Google, it comes from the Greek root glyphein (to carve) and theke (storing place). So basically, it is a storage place for art….and statuary in particular!!

Come to think about it, there were a LOT of statues!!!

This particular “storage area” represents the art collection of Carl Jacobson who was the son of the founder of Carlsberg Breweries. Apparently, there is a LOT of money in beer!!

As I walked into the galleries, I was first struck by the color of the walls in each room…..

The first room was a stunning vermilion which highlighted this splendid sculpture……

“Little Girl with A Dead Bird” by J.A. Jerichau

I was mesmerized by the eyes of these women…..

“Girl Welcoming a Person Entering” by Wilhelm Marstrand

….and loved the story that was told by these three gentlemen…..

“Brewer Jacobsen in Conversation with the French Sculptors Chapu and Gautherin” by P.S. Kroyer

This painting looked VERY much like a piece of cloth…..

“Hermes and the Charities” by Vilehlm Hammershoi

A closer look showed the texture that he produced in paint….

HOW can they do this???

I appreciated the images that were depicted with just a few lines in this painting…..

“The Wood and the Apple Trees” by Theodore Rousseau

The same was true for this one…..

“Autumn Morning on Lake Sortedam” by Christen Kobke

These small dots of paint tell such a story……

Finally, I love the light that shows in this painting…..

“Michelanelo’s Cypresses in the Cloister of the Baths of Diocleton” by Martinus Rerbye

Just look at this tree…..

I truly enjoyed checking out these galleries but my favorite are the Impressionist artists…..

Come back tomorrow for those!!!

Q-C Glasses at the Danish National Museum

Yesterday I walked you up to the Danish National Museum but didn’t let you inside. Today we venture in!!!

Now I am not much of a history buff. It was my LEAST favorite class at school. So when I enter museums, I am NOT looking at the history side of things but rather at the design, color, and shapes of things. And there are always items that are particularly interesting to me and I hope are interesting to you as well!!

First up were these two “Virtual Reality” shows from the 1600’s!! Here is the information that was provided….

The box itself is not at all interesting…..

When you look in the box from the top, you see a three-sided painting that doesn’t make a lot of sense

But when you put your eye up to the peephole, this is what you see……

And in the other box, you see this…..

By the way, both of these photos were taken with my phone looking thru the peephole.

BUT….what caught my eye was the design around each peephole…..

After I bent down to look in the hole, I realized that the two bottom circles were from the cheeks of the lookers…..depending on which eye you used to peep. The marks above the hole were eyebrows and foreheads!!

The other optical illusion that I saw was very interesting……

This is the view from the top of the box…..

….a mass of colors swirled together!!

But when you look at the cylinder, you can see the painting…..

Who in their right mind figured this out!!!

In the “Other Nations” area of the museum, this picture caught my eye……

It looked like an abstration of a seed head or flower.

Then I read about it…..

I can’t imagine exactly how all of those knots helped them to remember but I sure do like it as a piece of art!!!

It would make a fun Whole-Cloth design!!

In the Africa section, I saw this model wearing a black and white woven garment…..

Look at a detail of the squares…..

Don’t you love how some of them are split into stripes or different colors are added in. It is VERY simple but so effective!!

In the American section, there was a lot of art from the Navajo Nation and this weaving reminded me of a quilt that you might see at QuiltCon…..

Finally, my favorite inspiration from the museum was this cloth from one of the Polynesian nations…..

I am not much for improvisational piecing but I might enjoy it if I limited the number of fabrics and split them into blocks like this. Another item for the To-Do list!!

Come back later in the week as we spend several days in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a wonderful art museum!!
