Do Your Square’s Dance??

I posted a short time ago about my boring Square-in-a-square quilt and the way that I found to make it less boring……

I enjoyed making this quilt and realized that it would make a simple pattern…..

……so I wrote it!!

Once I finished this quilt, I wanted to play further so, after I made the Square-In-A-Square blocks, I decided to change the straight square blocks a bit.

I started with a 2.5-inch square and added a border on two sides of the square……

….and then a border on the opposite sides……

After that, I treated them as normal squares, adding the background strips to each side and then alternating them with the “S-I-A-S” blocks.

I like how the design turned out……

The additional light blue border adds a bit more sparkle to the quilt!!

I wouldn’t mind playing further with the design to see if I can make those squares go “WILD AND CRAZY”!!!

YES….THE DAY HAS COME….. we are ready to start…..

TWELVE WAYS TO QUILT A SAWTOOTH STAR

This is week one of 12 where I will demonstrate different ways to quilt a Sawtooth Star Block.

Many of you have already used the free pattern to make your quilt top. The pattern is available on the “Free Patterns” tab above.

Before we get started, please watch this introduction video. It will give you some ideas for quilting these designs as well as other ways that you can be involved in the challenge without actually quilting…..

Now that you have been “introducted”, let’s get started with the first block. I apologize for the quality of this video….next week will be better….I promise!!

I am happy with how this first block turned out……

….and I can’t wait to get on to NUMBER TWO!!!!

Please come back next Friday for more.

If you miss a week, you can find all of the videos and resources on the “Challenges” page (see the tab at the top).

Are you in a rut with your machine quilting? Sure, you know HOW to do FMQ and you have 4 or 5 patterns that you do well. BUT, you are bored with those designs and need a push to try some new things. If so, please join “MOVE-IT…. a Free-Motion Quilting Boot Camp”!! I will take you on a FREE 10-week journey to learn new designs and become more comfortable with just MOVING IT!! My geese are flying straight now!!

Back in November, I posted about my Flying Geese having issues.

I was making them using the No-Waste, 4 at a time method and this is what was happening….

One side of the goose was simply too short!!

I presented this dilemma to the quilting world and many had good ideas for me to try. Marie made the suggestion that the inside squares be pulled in toward the center a bit. I asked a follow-up question and she even sent a diagram!!….

Quilter’s are the best!!!

Actually, when I looked at the WingClipper instructions from Deb Tucker, I saw that she said to “nudge” the fabric into the center…..

I decided to follow their instructions…..

And look what happened……

FOUR PERFECT FLYING GEESE!!!!!

Sawtooth Star – Free Pattern

As I mentioned yesterday, I am planning a new Free-Motion-Quilting series called……

Twelve Ways to Quilt a Sawtooth Star

I am looking forward to using a variety of techniques, including ruler and Free-motion-quilting, and to TESTING MYSELF to see just how many different ideas I can come up with.

But first, I need to make a quilt top to work on!!

After thinking about it a LOT, I decided to work with the Sawtooth Star. As I researched a bit I learned that…..

The block name can be traced back to a”Farm & Fireside Magazine”, published in 1884, however, the block can be seen in quilts prior to that date. In the tradition of quilt blocks being named after everyday items, sawtooth refers to the right-angled triangles looking similar to the teeth of a saw. The block has also appeared under various names such as Evening Star, Variable Star, and North Star.

Whatever it is called, I like that it is a simple block…..

….consisting of one large square, four small squares, and four flying geese units.

This is the quilt that I designed to use…….

….and you can download the FREE pattern by clicking HERE……

I will talk more about making the quilt top in the next few weeks and then LET THE QUILTING BEGIN….

I can’t wait!!!

Please contact me if you have any questions about the pattern or the Quilt-A-Long.
